Members Warpe Posted October 15, 2011 Members Report Posted October 15, 2011 What is the common leather thickness used on purses/handbags? Quote Where quality and comfort come together one stitch at a time. www.gallantgunleather.com
MADMAX22 Posted October 15, 2011 Report Posted October 15, 2011 Depends on the style of purse, its size, how light or heavy you want it to be and such. I think on average you can use around 5oz leather. Its a good starting point atleast. You can do the body in thicker leather if you want and the gussets in a thinner leather. If its a smaller purse with heavy tooling I would use a heavier leather like 7 or even 8oz. If its a big purse though that can get heavy so stick with the lighter weight leather. Quote
Timd Posted October 15, 2011 Report Posted October 15, 2011 I use 5-6 oz., and line them with 2 oz. Quote

Members Warpe Posted October 16, 2011 Author Members Report Posted October 16, 2011 Two more questions: What thread size, and most importantly, what is a good book for this to read? Quote Where quality and comfort come together one stitch at a time. www.gallantgunleather.com
Timd Posted October 16, 2011 Report Posted October 16, 2011 For thread, I use the 4-ply thread from here: Royalwood For books, you can't go wrong with Al Stohlman's Making Cases series. No specific purse patterns, but a wealth of knowledge to help make almost anything. Quote
