sherpa Report post Posted October 19, 2011 Hello, This is my first post. I remember that square felt daubers for applying edge dye were available at one time. Does anyone know if they are still made? I have searched for them for some time but can only find round wool. I would much appreciate any help. A good alternative would also be weelcome. I was using foam eyeliner applicators which worked great except the foam tip kept coming off which I guess means they weren't so great.

I ended up using the little 1" diameter hard felt buffing wheels for rotary tools. like the Dremel. They are firm enough so that I get a good straight edge and hold quite a bit of dye. They also can be reused ...... same color only. I don't know where to find small squares of 1/4" thick firm felt, (and I have tried) but after starting to use these little things, I gave up looking for what we used to be able to get easily. OH, also be sure to use rubber gloves. Mike

I am using the small round wool ones on bigger edges and cotton swabs on small things. Sometimes I burn one of the round wool daubers with a lighter and rub the burnt fuzz off to make a smaller, harder dauber and that works pretty well. One thing I saw suggested somewhere is to use a small square of sponge held with a clothes pin as a dauber. I haven't tried that but I think if you experiment to find the correct density of sponge that could work well. Bill
oldtimer Report post Posted October 19, 2011 I cut squares out of 1/2" felt and hold them with cloth pins to dye edges / Knut
Northmount Report post Posted October 19, 2011 A felt boot liner might be suitable material too. If you are disposing of any, keep the top few inches that are still good. If the felt isn't thick enough, or firm enough, fold it over tight and use a clothes pin.
celticleather Report post Posted October 20, 2011 Chiropody felt (available at most pharmacies) works well. It's about 5mm thick, and you can get 144 ½"-square pads from a 6"-square sheet!
Spence Report post Posted October 20, 2011 I have a sheet of 1/4" foam lying around gathering dust. I decided to cut some strips 3/8"x 1" and I put them into a coffee can beside the coffee can I have the wool strips I use for dye. I use a pair of long forceps and fold over the foam and clip it into the forceps. I can then dip the foam into the edge dye and I've not had any problems with the dye extending off the edge.
