barbiesdude Report post Posted November 18, 2011 Here is my second bosal. Pretty much the same as the first except this one turned out even better. Plaiting straighter, core med. soft not as floppy as my first, pineapple bigger with more bites and interweaves. The really cool thing is that this one is sold. Thanks again for everyone's help in answering my questions. I'm sure I will have more. Jamie

Aggiebraider Report post Posted November 19, 2011 Nice Job! I just finished my first all leather one (have made a couple nylon bosals) but havent gotten any pics of it yet. I wish that my nose button turned out as good as yours did! Did you do a multiple string nose button or just a single string? CW
barbiesdude Report post Posted November 19, 2011 Hey Aggie, That one was 6 strands and I did the braided method instead of the spiral. Looking forward to seeing your work. Jamie Nice Job! maui paniolo Report post Posted November 21, 2011 Very, very, nice. I'm working on my 2nd bosal and it too is sold, but didn't put a price on it. If you don't mind me asking how much did you sell it for? I hope mine comes out as nice. Tony
barbiesdude Report post Posted November 22, 2011 I had this one sold to a friend, so he got the good buddy discount of $125. But I think I will charge between $150 and $200 from now on, depending on the size. I know that may still be a little cheap but I know people who have started out making saddles and letting them go for less than they would like, just to get their name out there. Now they are in demand and charging more what they want. Hopefully this will work for me too. I would say your second bosal will be awesome! Your first one sure looked good. How do you do your cores? and what stiffness are they? Very, very, nice. I'm working on my 2nd bosal and it too is sold, but didn't put a price on it. How do you do your cores? and what stiffness are they? I'm using an old reata of mine. The bosals are pretty raggy and works well if the horse is soft, but need to learn how to make a stiffer core because my stallion gets a little bracey with it.LOL good thing I have others hackamores I bought. I also sold my bosal to a good friend, and he looks at and buys a lot of tack, so Im going to let he pay me what he thinks its worth. I may find out how good of friend I have, LOL he may pay me more than I think its worth, or less either way I'll be ok with that.. This will be the last order I take for a while I want to make some more things I want to do and if someone wants to buy them when they'er done then I'll sell them. barbiesdude Report post Posted November 27, 2011 Thanks everyone for the nice comments. Rob, I sure have looked at your's and Allen's tutorials a BUNCH. They have been a big help. Enrique, The dimensions on a bosal can vary, depending on the size of horse, or what the customer is wanting. Basic dimensions are 10"- 12" bottom of nose button to top of heel knot, 4 1/2" inside cheeks widest spot, 7 1/4" - 8 1/4" nose button ( while is is flat out, before bending over ). Jamie Really nice work.
Vaquero1 Report post Posted November 27, 2011 Jamie, your hackamore is awesome- real straight and everything looks tight and even... can´t belive its your second one. my first 10 hackamores was allready for garbage ;-) your heelknot looks very even and round too. how do you build it up, didi you use some ring knots and a spacer? did you drill the core together? congratulations my friend!!! barbiesdude Report post Posted November 27, 2011 Thanks Michael, couldn't have done it without your help with the nose button. For the foundation I did a leather heel block/spacer that I screwed in from the inside with a brass wood screw (pre-drill). then I tied two ring knots, the top one big and bulky, the bottom a little less by using a little narrower string. Then typical loopty loop with your plaiting strings around the two knots. Here is where I might have gotten a little out of the box. I took another brass screw and and screwed between the v's in the bottom ring knot through the core into the heel block to secure even more, If that heel knot pulls off, it was one heck of a wreck. Then I took a piece of latigo or chap leather about 3/8" or 1/2" x 1/16" thick and glued and wrapped around the works. I skived/edged the edges to smooth. Then did my pineapple. Hope this makes sense. Going to do some more experimenting this week with cores. A rolled core with a twisted core around it? I'll let you know how it works out.
