Tips For Cleaning Up Excess Contact Cement?

Recommended Posts

Can someone please tell me the steps to use for cement cleanup while doing inlay of leather into leather, like on boot tops.

To do inlay it looks like you have to brush cement onto the back of the hole and front of the inlay, and there is always extra cement on the front of the inlay that needs to be cleaned off.

Currently i am trying out the new barge TF, blue can with the TF solvent.

Thanks Marty

Marty, . . . I truly hope someone comes to your rescue on this. I don't know of anything short of a very, . . . very, . . . sharp razor knife, . . . just barely slicing off the area that has the contact cement on it, . . . then dying and finishing and hoping for the best.

May God bless,

Dwight

If you can find a piece of crepe mocassin or shoe sole...it works wonders...I keep one in each of my sewing machine drawers. You can also buy a "glue eraser" anywhere that sells scrapbooking supplies...it's just a piece of crepe with a fancy name. Hope this helps

Take about a teaspoonful of the cement and pour it onto a flat surface (like a plate or saucer) and allow it to air-dry completely. When dry, peel it off the plate, and mould it into a ball. This can then be used to lightly rub the surfaces that need cement removed, and will lift the cement easily. I've even used this method to remove cement from sueded leather.

FWIW from the grumpy old guy; It sounds as though you want to glue the entire inlay to the front piece. I generally use very little cement and just in a few places to hold the inlay in place while stitching it to the front piece. Just a few small spots around the perimeter do fine --- and no excess to worry about. A sample. Mike

Thank you, I appreciate the kind words. Generally my stuff has few 'embellishments' so this is a departure. Mike
