lottarope Report post Posted February 28, 2012 Hello, I am considering the Ron's drawdon stand and the laser attachment. It sounds really slick. Does anyone have one who would like to comment on the pros and cons of it. Comments about this stand and others that have laser attachments would also be really appreciated. Thanks in advance, Buck
GrampaJoel Report post Posted March 5, 2012 Hey Buck, I have a Ron's draw down stand. I love it. I love being able to raise or lower a saddle when working on one. I did modify the stand some though. I found that I couldn't easily move it out of my way when I needed to do so, especially when it has a saddle on it. So I went down to home depot and bought a piece of wood that was cut into a round shape and added locking casters to the round and then put the round on the bottom of the draw down stand. Now I can just roll it out of the way when ever I need to. I dont have the lazer attachment, but I dont miss it either. The saddle attachment that raises the saddle for cantle sewing would be nice to have, but I just throw the saddle up on my work bench and sew there. So again I don't miss this attachment either. Hope this helps. Joel
Nathan Horn Report post Posted March 7, 2012 I used a drawdown stand a few weeks ago at a clinic that the guy had put a laser on it himself. He had an arm made out of inch boxed tubing that was over top the tree and he attached a laser to it. It was nice to help find the center lines on the tree while putting the ground seat on. It needed some things changed, but like I said, it was a homemade deal. I have never seen the particular stand you are talking about, but I did like having the laser. bruce johnson Report post Posted March 8, 2012 Buck, I have one of the Ron's stands and have not regretted it one bit. My wife talked me into buying one at a show. She's a keeper. I really like cantle binding attachment. I can set the heights and lay to one side or the other to see into the corners or underneath with out going upside down. I have light in there and stab myself a lot less. Ron used to have a little testimonial on his website I wrote to him after a long session of sewing bindings on a few saddles. I have the laser. It is not an absolute necessity but I'd get it again probably. It is alright once you get the tree center marks and the laser lined up over it. Basically it is a magnetic base laser that sits on the arm above. It can shoot lines or crosshairs. That arm is not 100% solid, and can wiggle or shift slightly if you move against the stand or reset a rigging and go back to check. I found that I spent as much time resetting the laser as I did setting the riggings. I was faster with my tack and string and rulers for drop. I do use it for a final check. It is also good for the saddle that comes in for repair to check if the rings are even.
