Matt Alsaker Report post Posted April 26, 2012 I put this question up on the dying / finishing forum, but thought it might be more appropriate here. I have made a few wallets, knife sheaths, and holsters. I've always used Super Sheen for the final coat to seal everything up. A friend, who's as green at leather work as I am, convinced me to try Bag Coat on my last knife sheath. I preferred the finish to Super Sheen. I don't know what the difference is between the two produces. Is one superior to the other? Can I use Bag Coat on holsters and wallets? Thanks... Dwight Report post Posted April 26, 2012 For holsters, I very seldom use any thing other than Resolene, . . . 50/50 mix with water, . . . brushed on, . . . sometimes 2 coats. First, it has a UV blocker, so I know my product will not be adversely affected by sunlight, . . . and secondly, it adds a bit to the rigidity of the holster. I have an IWB holster here made of 5/6 leather, . . . Resolene coated, . . . it is almost as hard as a Kydex holster. I do prefer Bag Kote for billfolds and purses. (Maybe that is why they called it "Bag" Kote) Matter of fact, I did a very different billfold a few weeks back for a new customer, . . . sent it to him, . . . he was absolutely thrilled with it, . . . and of course it had Bag Kote as it's finish. I don't use BK on holsters though, . . . because it is not as rigid, and does not have the UV, . . . but that is just me, . . . May God bless, Dwight
katsass Report post Posted April 26, 2012 (edited) I put this question up on the dying / finishing forum, but thought it might be more appropriate here. FWIW from the old grumpy guy; I agree with Dwight., bag coat is designed for softer, more malleable leathers. It's designed to flex. Holsters shouldn't do much flexing at all. I also use an acrylic finish on my holsters, followed by a light coat of Kiwi neutral wax, buffed out. The acrylics will penetrate and assist in firming to a degree. The only things I do differently is that I don't care for Resolene so I use another product, but do dilute my finish 50/50 with water. I also don't brush it on, but use an airbrush to apply it. Waaay back (before I could afford an air compressor) I used an old Windex pump sprayer to apply the stuff. Just stay way back off the project and let the stuff 'mist' on. Rinse the sprayer with clear water. Mike Edited April 26, 2012 by katsass
