Willbury Report post Posted May 17, 2012 Hello All, I recently purchased a Singer 29K60 machine and am hoping someone here can shed a bit of light on something that is happening with mine. I have essentially had the whole machine apart, replaced worn drivers and gears in the gearbox, machine has new bearings in the cams etc. The machine itself seems to be working fine now and the stitching seems good. The concern I have is with the shuttle/hook, as the machines needle is in it's up-cycle, pulling thread from the bobbin, the shuttle with the bobbin jumps, or appears to get lifted to the point where it hits the needle plate. This seems odd to me, the movement seems too much. I have posted a link here to a short video where you can see this jumping happening pretty clearly. Does this happen on your large bobbin machines, if not any suggestions what might be the cause? http://www.talltreecycles.ca/uploads/29k60.mov I have had a look at some small bobbin 29K machines where this certainly isn't happening, but the large bobbin pulls the thread through a small loop in the center of the shuttle, which in my opinion is more likely to cause this lifting. Any feedback would be much appreciated. Cheers, Will
Wizcrafts Report post Posted May 17, 2012 Mine doesn't jump like that. Maybe your bobbin springs are too tight, causing the bobbin case to lift with the thread, rather than feed smoothly. Or, perhaps you are using too large a top thread, which is forcing the case to lift to clear the thread going under it.
Trox Report post Posted May 17, 2012 Hi, I have an almost “new” 29K-72 (a machine with no wear) and it does the same. This also happens when you pull out the bobbin thread by hand; the thread tension moves the bobbin up. There should be a little spring on the top of the shuttle, which is missing on mine. Maybe that keeps the shuttle down, I do not know, my machine has always worked well with out it, it never skips a stitch. I always thought that spring was just for keeping the bobbin in place. Wiz, do you have that spring on yours? Trox
Wizcrafts Report post Posted May 18, 2012 Yes Trox, my bobbin case has the bobbin hold-down spring. I had a thought. Perhaps if the bobbin is almost empty, it will raise up like that, where a full bobbin has enough weight to stay down. Just guessing. I don't miss stitches either since I fixed the bent paddle shaped check spring on the needle bar.
Trox Report post Posted May 18, 2012 My bobbin is full with Nm tkt size 40 thread (fairly thin thread, same top and bottom and tension OK), do you thread the bobbin tread true the thread guide hole on the shuttle top? Mine is a blue long arm, it never skiped a stitch. The shuttle lifts like his does when I sew with it, I have never notice it before since it is no problem. There is room for the shuttle/bobbin house to lift, it only do so when it is in the possision when the thread can lift it. It is the take up spring that lifts it. The loop is already formed when it happens. Yes Trox, my bobbin case has the bobbin hold-down spring. I had a thought. Willbury Report post Posted May 18, 2012 I have both a new shuttle with the spring and an older one without, and same thing with both. I have messed around with the tension on the bobbin and it doesn't seem to make a difference (although I think I will go mess with this a bit more). Also it seems to be the same when the bobbin is near empty or full. Maybe I shouldn't worry about it since everything works fine, it just doesn't seem quite right. There must be something I'm missing here. Will
Trox Report post Posted May 18, 2012 I dont think so, do not worry about it. I think it should be this way, you cannot break anything. I am not worried. Wizcrafts Report post Posted May 18, 2012 My Patcher is also a long arm, blue body, big bobbin machine. The model is 29k172. I run the bobbin thread through the center hole that sticks up out of the center of the bobbin. The side spring keeps the bobbin itself from flipping out under speed. My machine was skipping stitches until I looked at the paddle shaped spring on the needle bar, saw it was loose in the thread channel, and bent it inward for better contact with the top thread. Mine is a metalic blue, jumping shuttle and jumping foot 29K-72 EL (electric, original clutch that I never used) Here seen working on a plastic aligator micro golf bag. Trox Report post Posted May 20, 2012 Big pictures! Here is a quick way to resize a picture in windows Vista, I click on the picture and it opens in windows photo gallery. Then I choose the Email button (on the top border), the pic then resize and you will get five sizes to choose from. I know that medium (default size for emails) will often work well on LW net. I click Ok and an email with the attached pic opens. I open the attached pic in the mail and make a copy. I use the copy. It is fast and the right size, with no needs for other programs. Message. Willbury Report post Posted June 12, 2012 Just happened across and couldn't resist picking up another long arm large bobbin 29U. This machine is very mint, and yet the shuttle does the same jumping thing as my 29K60. It sews just fine so I guess I will just have to stop worrying about it! Trox Report post Posted June 12, 2012 I hate to say it, but I told you so. Very good looking 29U, the first I have seen. I use the 29U manual for mine, I cannot see any differences between them. What is the full name on that 29U? Trox Just happened across and couldn't resist picking up another long arm large bobbin 29U. Willbury Report post Posted June 13, 2012 This model is the 29U 172A. Essentially the same as the K models with a few minor changes. As I understand it they made a 29U 171, 172, 173 in Japan. I would guess this is the last batch of Patchers Singer made. I love how mint the condition of this new one is, however it lacks a bit of the character of the Scottish made K models (decals and badges).
mogwild Report post Posted June 13, 2012 Thanks guys. After seeing the pictures my wife tells me she "needs" one.
