Christopher Lang Report post Posted May 22, 2012 My name's Christopher, and I live in Brentwood Bay, which is right near Victoria BC, on Vancouver Island. Many moons ago, when I was in elementary school, I remember making a change purse, and an arm band out of leather, at some sort of leathercraft class. It was so long ago however, all I remember is that is was fun, but nothing else! Hahaha. I've always been interested, but never had the time or money to pursue making leather goods for myself, but last week, I was a friends place, telling him about the bike I'm getting ready for the road (1943 Harley WLC), and he said wait a minute, "I've got just the thing for you." So, he gave me the horse hide pictured below. As you can see, it's been folded up for 40 years, and looks a bit shop worn. Still having the hair on it, I imagine it would make a unique set of simple saddle bags, and perhaps a seat covering, unless that's a bad idea, or you can come up with a better idea! My bike is by no means pristine, just an old bobber, so having pre-worn spots isn't going to hurt my feelings. I also figure this would be a good project to learn on, as the material was free, and as long as the bags function, I'll be happy. I do wonder what the heck I can put on the finished projects to make them water resistant, what with the hair there and all. Also, one of my friends thinks it would make a cool riding jacket, but uh, I don't know that I'd be cool enough to pull off a hair covered jacket. So, to sum up; Hi, I'll be reading and lurking, and am happy for any advice you folks might give. Maybe it isn't a horse even?! I only know what I was told. Here's the shopworn hide. I'll link to my photodork.
Ferg Report post Posted May 23, 2012 I guess that could be from a "Paint" but somehow I doubt it. Looks more like "Hair On" cowhide. I certainly have not seen every hide that has been tanned but I don't believe I have ever seen Horse hide tanned with hair on. Steve Lowe Report post Posted June 18, 2012 Being a Harley rider myself, I think it would make an awesom saddle bag. I also need a pattern to make some for myself. I would love to see your finished product.
Christopher Lang Report post Posted June 18, 2012 When I get to it, I'll post some pictures. For now, I'm still toiling (happily) on the metal and greasy parts of the bike!!
Boyd Report post Posted June 28, 2012 Hi Christopher I'm also from Victoria, I live near Tillicum Mall. I'm no pro but if you want I can take a look at your leather and maybe give you some advice on the piece. I've also got tons of books and stuff so I'll see if I have a patern for you. I've never made saddle bags myself but I want to. As for weather proofing it I'll check with my Dad, he'll know but I'm thinking many many coats of Neetsfoot oil would be required. Thankfully it's easy stuff to work with. Let me know if you're interested. Boyd
