Let's Make Best Leather Machine List

Recommended Posts

I have searched around a little, and read and reread everything I came across re best machines including Wiz's invaluable series re the basics of a good leather machine.....BUT...I guess because of the advertisers.....I can find no list of all the brands and different models thereof that are suitable for heavy leather work and which are the most highly rated. Does anyone know of such a list?

I would be glad to assemble such a list- Brand/Model/feed/max sew thickness/durablility/and some other important aspects, if the members want to nominate all the machines they consider qualify as an industrial strength leather capable sewing machine.

I am not one to suggest machines in your list. That said, true to several posts on this forum, searching the archives for what you want is a little intimidating. Most every machine revued/sold by member dealers is top notch. Obviously there are a number of different machines that will do different things better. When looking for a heavy machine you should be looking at 441 clones or similar machines that will sew 1/2" thickness of hard leather at least. Remember, most of the heavy stitchers will not sew thread below #138.

Campbell Bosworth - Randall needle and awl machines with linen thread and Sellari's wax. Need speed? Union Lockstitch, a lot of people like Landis 16, I own 2 Landis 3's but they don't pull a stitch as tight.

Most other machines are just heavy duty versions of Granma's Singer.

Of course, what I actually use is an Adler 205-370 (?), it's easy to operate, clean, fast, I can sew nylon when I have to, changing size of thread or color is simple. Drawbacks? Unless you want to buy a hundred needles of the same size, they're twisted the wrong way. If you're not careful and backstitch enough, nylon thread will pull right out.

There's lots more to say on the subject, but I've got a 12-K and a patching machine outside callin' my name and I've got to mind before it gets dark.

No offense but at least once a year we get someone with less than 5 posts suggesting we build a list or database of some sort. Patterns, Leather suppliers, Sewing machines etc.

Get several posts under your belt and get known by the community before you start volunteering to assist. I appreciate your enthusiasm but learn your way around first. The list you suggest is given in just about every request for info on which sewing machine to purchase. The info is already out there.

To paraphrase my favorite quote,"Nobody can be so amusingly arrogant as a new member who has just discovered an old idea and thinks it is his own." Not meant as an insult at all. Its just cute.

The above is my opinion and may not be that of other members or management.

Dear Michael, thanks for the input.......You made a very strong point when you said "The list you suggest is given in just about every request for info on which sewing machine to purchase. The info is already out there."

But........why don't you tell us where it is out there? And since you have verified that others are always asking the same question, why isn't out there in an easy to find list as I suggested?

Just sayin.............now you can rant some more about newbies and what jerks we are

Knut,

They may not be twisted wrong for you. Look at most pricking irons and they are \\\\, all the needles I get are ////, (it looks backward in print) but if you want your machine sewing to mimic your hand stitching, it doesn't. Then if I do need to hand stitch through machined holes for some reason, MY stitching doesn't look right. With a needle and awl machine, you can set your awl however you want.

Hope that explains what I'm talking about. I've been using this machine for over ten years now, so I'm not really unhappy with it.

Kevin, OK, I understand now. I have never faced that problem as I use "S" point needles when sewing leather.

I am sure you can find needles twisted your way , look for "794 LL" point.

First it wasnt a rant and second I never said you were a jerk. It was just my opinion. The first paragraph of your op was a valid request. I was commenting on the second paragraph. I did say, "Not meant as an insult at all. Its just cute." I'm sorry you took it the wrong way. But you did prove my point. If you had several posts under your belt here then I would have been able to tell from your style if you would have taken what I said the wrong way.

There is nothing wrong with being zealous. I was trying to help with my post not rant. Again, I made the point a few times that I was not trying to offend or insult. I apologize that you took it the wrong way.
