IanCantwell Report post Posted July 23, 2008 You're not wrong. I'm lucky enough to be an hour from their factory and all the leading wholesalers over here carry their range, it is wonderful stuff to work with. Guess you'll be paying a premium over there with the shipping and the dollar rate. We've had it bad for years getting western stuff shipped here. Can't wait to see what you come up with, bet you'll be able to use every sq. inch.
rdb Report post Posted July 23, 2008 I've heard nothing but oohs and ahhs about sedgwick leathers. I can only imagine how good they are, but in the meantime I get my bridle leathers at Zack Whites. It's beautiful leather to work with, and I especially like the sides, they are a less refined finish than the butts. They are expensive to me (around $9), but from what I understand, about half the price of the sedgwick. From what I'm told, they're American hides tanned in Europe, and brought back. (who knows where in Europe?) I'm happy with this stuff, but would like to know if anyone has had experience comparing this type bridle with Sedgwick??? Is there that much difference? pella Report post Posted July 23, 2008 rdb: hum... never eard about Sedgwick leather raw stock coming from usa? But the only thing i am sure of it that it is "cured" in England (so possible to be tanned outside) http://www.je-sedgwick.co.uk/profile.cfm I order regulary Sedgwick from england and it have a beautiful waxy coat. Compare to usa bridle leather: I think difference is in the finishing, greasing mostly (curying), much more fat/waxes content than a drier usa bridle leather. When displaying "new" product, it sure appeal the eye. It is also agreable in hands. It break down quite fast (unless a particulary super strong butt), become very supple. I cannot compare to Zack, never use it. Sometime i get a better hide from Usa tanned stock, talking about tightness of fibers, all cows not created equal...but Sedgwick for sure cost me twice the price of an USA hide (in Canada) here someting made out of sedgwick "shinny" leather

rdb Report post Posted July 23, 2008 I think you misunderstood me. I wasn't talking about the sedgwick. I was saying that the bridle leather I buy, is to the best of my knowledge, American hides sent to Europe for tanning (probably someplace like Romania, or some such). Then they are brought back. The tanning is supposedly in the traditional European style of Sedgwick. All I know is the leather I buy is great. Stuffed to the gills with fat, and breaks down real soft. Feels just like leather should feel, not that dry stuff that feels like cardboard. The last time I looked, the sedgwick was somewhere around $20, I may be wrong, and Seigel may have it a lot cheaper. But at $8-9 from Zack's, and probably other places, I'm just wondering how much better this Sedgwick stuff really is? I know in marketing, advertising your stuff made with Sedgwick is a good thing. No criticism here of the stuff, I haven't had the pleasure of using it. Just wondering.. rdb: hum... never eard about Sedgwick leather raw stock coming from usa? pella Report post Posted July 23, 2008 oh! yes, i misunderstand you! Ok i just take a look on zack white web site : http://www.eleatherworks.com/product.php?p...=490&page=1 and they say the double butt in tanned in europe. Pretty cheap compare to sedgwick, it is same price as leather tanned in usa. I'd like to try it. When i say "drier usa leather" i dont mean cardboard leather, i mean very high quality, but just less stuffed.
