Contributing Member SooperJake Posted July 24, 2012 Contributing Member Report Posted July 24, 2012 (edited) I was at Tandy the other day and looked at their 8-9oz Premium Double Shoulders. There is a coating on the back of them and the folks working their really couldn't elaberate on what it was, or how it effected working with it. Does anyone have any recent experience with these hides and can you shed some light on this subject? How does it wet mold, for instance? Thanks, Jake Edited July 24, 2012 by SooperJake Quote
Members Studio-N Posted July 24, 2012 Members Report Posted July 24, 2012 It is gool ol' Gum Trag on the back. I haven't molded it but it embossed well on a belt roller. Quote
Contributing Member SooperJake Posted July 24, 2012 Author Contributing Member Report Posted July 24, 2012 (edited) The coating I saw and am referencing is a kind of grey almost rubbery looking or maybe like latex paint. There was still a slight nap on the flesh side, and I figured the coating was meant to hide some of this. I didn'y buy one, despite finding a very nice looking piece, because I was unsure of how it would wet mold, and the answer I got at the store was not reassuring enough. Can gum tragacanth be grey? and, will a thinner lining stick to the back with contact cement, or does the trag need to be removed? Thanks, Jake It is gool ol' Gum Trag on the back. Members JWGlover Posted July 24, 2012 Members Report Posted July 24, 2012 I sanded that stuff off of mine first then molded. Seemed to be fine. Quote

Phatdaddy Posted July 24, 2012 Report Posted July 24, 2012 Any idea what it is, JW? Jake I had the same question, here is my thread with a few responses. http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=39349&st=0&p=244428&fromsearch=1entry244428 I had bought one but returned it uncut. Members JWGlover Posted July 24, 2012 Members Report Posted July 24, 2012 I have no idea. I think it's on there to hide some of the fleshy parts. It has a tendency to flake off so that's why I sanded it. It would probably have to be sanded anyway in order for it to adhere to a lining piece. Quote
