Members Boyd Posted July 25, 2012 Members Report Posted July 25, 2012 I'm planning on making some gators for hiking and I don't have any oil tanned leather, only veggie tanned. I've got lots of thicknesses and suede as well so designing and decorating (if I feel like it) isn't a problem. What I need to know is how do I weather proof the leather enough to withstand harsh enviroments without totaly soaking them in neatsfoot oil, or is that the only way? If you're not sure what a gator is; they are sleve like items that cover the top of your boot from about the ankle and go up to just below the knee. they are used to keep water and dirt from getting in your boots and protect your lower pant legs. Tree Reaper Posted July 25, 2012 Report Posted July 25, 2012 Canvas waterproofing would repel water. Quote
Members Iron Pounder Posted July 25, 2012 Members Report Posted July 25, 2012 I have really good luck with Sno Seal. http://www.atsko.com/products/waterproofing/sno-seal.html I don't think that will show as a clickable link but could just copy and paste if not. You have to heat up the leather and it kind of just melts in. Quote
Members Boyd Posted July 25, 2012 Author Members Report Posted July 25, 2012 That sounds like a good one! I just called the supplier and got the answers I wanted. And there are two suppliers in town. Thanks! Quote
Contributing Member UKRay Posted July 26, 2012 Contributing Member Report Posted July 26, 2012 I'd endorse Sno-Seal too. Just keep the tin handy as it will need regular re-application. Ray Quote
