Topic: Blue Gun Molds~ Sig P239 9Mm Vs P239 .40/.357 Sig

Recommended Posts

I started a topic on the H&K USP compact 9/40mm vs the .45 Ring's Blue gun molds dimensional size differences and Mark Garrity pretty much cleared that up with saying the USPc .45 is 3/8" longer than the USPc 9mm/40 and the dimensions were identical.

Now with that being said. For all the holster makers out there. What about other guns that are offered in the 9mm and .40/357 sig configurations? Does one mold work with both the 9mm version of the gun and the .40/357 sig version?

For instance the Sig Sauer P239 9mm and the P239 .40/.357 sig? I have another customer that wants a OWB pancake for his P239 9mm and I have a mold from Ring's that is marked .357 sig. I took a look over at the SIGforum.com and it looks like the slide on the P239 .40/357 sig slide is slightly taller. The dimensions on the Sig Sauer website show that they are identical. Can anyone confirm this?

Anyone make a holster for a customer or themselves using a mold that worked in both the 9mm and .40/357 SIG P239?

What about the P228 9mm and P229 9mm and .40/357 sig molds? Do they work with each other? What about the P226 9mm and .40/357 sig molds? Any experience with these?

Also, what about the Springfield XD sub- compact and compact 9mm /.40/.45? Are the blue guns interchangeable with these models?

From the top.....

the 239 frame is the same size in all calibers. The modern 220 and 226 are the same width in all calibers; however, the older German models are slightly narrower.

In Glocks, the 9mm, .357, .40 and .45 GAP all have the same width; the 10mm and the .45 ACP are slightly wider (about .1 inch).

The XD and XDM are different altogether. Within the XD line, the slide on the 9mm is about .08 thinner than on the .40. Either that, or my blue guns are really off. Not sure about the other calibers. I've got XDMs on order from a local distributor.

Don't get me started on 1911s. S&W and SIG both make proprietary frames, and Springfield and Kimber make proprietary sizes. And SIG makes a commander-sized version of their proprietary gun AND a rounded-corner "carry" version. You could have a wall full of 1911 dummy guns -- except that no one makes dummy guns for many of them.

Which reminds me, why do the four suppliers of dummy guns all make the same models (Ring's, Blackhawk, Duncan's Lindells's)?

No, the SIG P239 frames are not the same size. The .40/.357 SIG is slightly larger. It will not fit into a holster that has been well-molded for a 9 without destroying the holster.

Interesting. The company's specs don't indicate that -- although one of my manuals does say there is a .1" difference in overall height. Perhaps that's in the slide...

What K-Man said - the frame is thicker on a .40/357 P239, and the slide is both thicker and taller. You may get away with using a 9mm to mold a holster for a .40 and have a holster that is avery tight fit and require some break-in, but there will be no way to correct the loose fit of a holster molded for a .40/357 if it's intended puropse is to be used with a 9mm.

Sig is total PITA when it comes to gun variations; one of the worst in terms of changing things such as trigger gurad shapes and slide thicknesses on the same models. I was about to respond that you could use the same P229 mold gun for any caliber of P229 (except railed vs. non-railed - a whole other story), BUT the new P229 slides have complete slide serrations from top to bottom like a 226, instead of the half serrations of the "classic" 229. I think they do this just to mess with holster makers.

no kidding. I think there's actually four versions of the 229 out there -- the non-railed with the round trigger guard; the railed version with the square trigger guard and the half-height slide serrations at the rear; the new version with the full-length serrations at the rear; and the new version with full-length serrations at the rear and partial serrations up front. Oh yeah, and the new version without the rail and with full-length serrations at back.

And the variation in their 1911 line is worse -- railed or non-railed frames; traditional or square slides; front cocking serrations or not; fullsize, compact or snubby.

And there aren't any blue guns for any of them...

On the topic of your Blue Gun being off, I got a Rings 1911A1 and thought it was kind of slim, but I didn't pay much attention until I molded a holster to it and couldn't get my Springfield 1911A1 into it. I thought maybe Springfield beefed up their guns a little so I dragged out my Dad's old WWII 1911, and it wouldn't go it there either.

Wonder if Rings would take it back?

Mike
