Liberty Report post Posted August 9, 2012 From the little I can glean from the net I think that this machine is a medium weight machine but I'm not totally sure. I'm hunting for a machine that will do (2 5oz) 10oz's of rigid/dense veg tan for belts and I don't think this can do it, am I correct? At the same time I have heard "here" that motors and servos can make this possible, again...I might be mistaken. This could be an insanely good deal IF this machine is an acceptable machine for the task. I have pics if needed. Thank you!

Techsew Ron Report post Posted August 10, 2012 Great machine but it is designed for sewing garments, not leather. Ron
Liberty Report post Posted August 10, 2012 (edited) Daggonit...I just ran across this link and was gettin' giddy. Not the same machine eh? http://shop.raphaelsewing.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=6&products_id=442 Edited August 10, 2012 by Liberty
Techsew Ron Report post Posted August 10, 2012 Daggonit...I just ran across this link and was gettin' giddy. Not the same machine eh? http://shop.raphaels...products_id=442 Same machine, it is suitable for sewing garments and some light weight garment leather but really no thicker than that. Sorry for the confusion. Ron
Liberty Report post Posted August 10, 2012 Look at the second image down, that sure looks like 2 layers of 8/9 oz.

Liberty Report post Posted August 10, 2012 One would think that a machine in an ad that is being touted as a "leather sewing machine" would actually be sewing leather and not cloth/vinyl...just sayin.
Techsew Ron Report post Posted August 10, 2012 One would think that a machine in an ad that is being touted as a "leather sewing machine" would actually be sewing leather and not cloth/vinyl...just sayin. The description states "This machine is suitable for general garments, lightweight leather, canvas, vinyl." So if you're sewing garment leather or even chaps, this machine would be fine. If you're looking to sew thicker leather, you'll need a walking foot machine. Thanks, Ron

Thanks, Ron Thanks Ron, One more question, if I may? In the pics I posted is there any way to tell if it is a walking foot machine? The fellow I talked to on the phone did say it was a walking foot machine but I'll add that he knows less about it than I do and I'm purely going from hearsay. From the pictures you can't really tell because you cannot see the presser foot very clearly. This is just a very well known model that's been used in the manufacturing industry for the last few decades. If you'll visit the following link which is a guide to leather sewing machines, you can find photos of what a walking foot machine looks like: http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=25239 Ron

Do you need a close up of the area of the machine at or around the business end/needle portion of the machine or of something else...motors etc...? I've read Wiz's thread but it gets deep fast and I'm trying to pull off a great "deal" quickly, if it's the right deal. I'm callin him now for more pics/info. I appreciate your knowledge and help. Wizcrafts Report post Posted August 10, 2012 Liberty; You are going to want to curtail your search to a triple feed walking foot machine, with a large bobbin, capable of sewing 3/8 inch with #138 thread, or even #207. This is the minimum requirement for the projects you have stated as in your plans. The Juki you are looking into is not that type of machine. A Juki 1541 or 1508 is.
