Members Armsman70 Posted September 13, 2012 Members Report Posted September 13, 2012 Hello I recently received some vegetable tanned leather about the 6oz in weight. It's in good condition, surface is clean but it looks a little old and I think dry. I took a small piece while dry and gave it a fold and the surface cracked. What would i need to do to get it so that when folded ( making buckle straps) it doesnt crack ? Thanks for any advice given. Pat Marshall Quote

Pat Marshall I think you answered your own question. You have a bad piece of leather. You should replace it with one of better quality. If you do use it for something whatever you make will likely fail in a short time. Quote
Tree Reaper Posted September 13, 2012 Report Posted September 13, 2012 Try rubbing Neatsfoot Oil into it and letting it sit for 24hrs. then try your bend test. If making a sharp fold, skive some leather from the back side along the fold. I always try and dampen the leather on a bend prior to bending. Kevin Quote
