My First Stab At A Holster

So my friend is a fat guy that's always complaining about how his 1911 beavertail jabs his side and why doesn't anybody make a hoster for that? Haha ok ok it's for me!

It's my first try at making a holster. Hand stitched and made start to finish in an afternoon while trying to keep a 4 month old happy. I sacrificed a little grip access for all day comfort.

Everybody on here seems to use nifty thumbnails, all I know how to do is photobucket. Hope it works, heres a shot finished but not sealed, and one totally done showing retention. It's a colt combat commander in stainless

For a first time with a 4mo old assistant It looks good. 2 things. First the grip as you mentioned, is too close to have a reliable draw on a consistent basis. If you lengthen the sweat guard on the next one you could get both grip and comfort.

Second, the slots for the belt are too long due to the curve. On the next one try straight slots. They will let the belt lay better on your side.

The stitching looks fine as does the dye job.

Keep up the good work it's a great start.

By the way. Next time you squash a spider wait till it gets off the leather. This way you don't get an indentation.

I agree with Michael that for a first attempt it looks outstanding. That said, on the next one, that sweat shield needs to be altered. The only reason to carry concealed, either personally or professionally, is to be able to respond instantly. If you are making holsters for yourself to do that, or for others who do, you don't want to sacrifice grip access for anything. Anybody who could execute that level of work on the first try (even with the high-priced assistant) will have no trouble changing the design of the sweat shield so that your hand touches nothing but grip and still rides all day. Keep up the good work!

Wow great feedback here nice site fellas and thanks. The knowledge and craftsmanship here are outstanding.

The holster wears great, best waistband option for my 1911. I end up wearing my '70s jackass shoulder rig more though because I'm sitting at work all day and the armpit carry has more comfort and access. Truthfully most of the time Im lazy and just throw a ppk or makarov in my pocket, but there's no crafty leather fun in that!
