Hi I've just bought a singer 99k to do some wallets and stuff basically to learn on as everything I do at the moment is hand stitched I've followed the instructions on threading but it seem s to get wound up underneath any advice would be most welcome

seems like you do not have tension on the upper thread.

Be sure the thread is unwinding from the bobbin in the proper direction, and that your bobbin tension is set relatively in a neutral setting. If those things are okay, may want to check the needle is seated correctly and the scarf is in the proper direction. Last thing to check would be the timing, to be sure the shuttle hook is always picking up the thread.

Top thread bunching up on the underneath is almost always caused by one of these things:

1. No tension, or too loose beehive spring tension in top thread disks
   
2. Excessive spring tension on bobbin thread
   
3. Bobbin thread jammed against bobbin case or shuttle race
   
4. Failure to hold back the threads, or at least the top thread, as you start to sew.

hi thanks for the advice i did get threading instructions and it worked fine for 4 or5 stitches then got caught up and now it isnt picking up the bottom thread just seems to get wound round something ?

this sewing fault can happen due to

---- incorrect sewing tension (adjust the tension)

----needle incorrectly set in needle clamp ( reset the needle)

----incorrect threading ( re thread machine )

----poorly lubricated thread ( use better quality thread )

----feed dog sway ( tighten the feed dog )

---- pressure foot bounce ( proper pressure foot )

Clean it. Crap in the bottom end or tension plates will cause all sorts of nastiness.

Occasionally the whole tension assembly is too far in which causes the tension to be released when you try to sew anything thicker than two layers of silk. Test this by slowly raising the presser foot and working out where the tension plates start to release.

Thanks Sylvia for the booklet links - really free PDF are often hard to find. I just bought a 185K, cosmetically refurbished model of the 99K, but the mechanism is the same.
