Good Finishing Method And Product?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys and gals,

Just curious what you use to "finish" your leather at the final stage after dyeing? I have the cheap "super Sheen" and am very un happy with it... I've heard of resolin, but not sure what brand or if theres a prticular type... Can someone pos a picture of what they use?

Thanks

Hi Edge, I commented on your other post too. Resolene is the name of the product from Fiebings. As far as I know, it's the only thing out there called resolene, so it's easy to find. Springfield Leather carries it, as well as many other products. There's a few different products I use myself, but lately I've been using Resolene, thinned 50/50 with water and applied in several lighter coats. You can either sponge it on, or spray with an airbrush. Just an FYI, it's also available in black color, to help with those black dye jobs that always seem to need a little assistance. They should also have it at a local Tandy if that's where you're shopping, but I prefer SLC myself.

Cyber thanks bud, I did not know it was its own product! lol.

I'll check it out, I just ordered a box of leather scraps to practice on, Its hard making myself understand I can't just learn this stuff overnight... I want to do so many projects by seeing the stuff on here, but knowing I need to cover the basics to where I can at least do them decent. Thanks again!

Resolene works best if you cut it 50-50 with water. Otherwise you can get bubbles when its applied full strength.

Edge, . . .

The belt and holster in my avatar are both done in Resolene, . . . unless a customer seriously objects, . . . it is what I use.

I like it because it more or less encapsulates the leather, . . . and defends it against oil, sweat, water, etc. Not that those products cannot hurt your item, . . . but a splash or dip will not harm them.

Additionally, . . . it has a UV blocker in it, . . . so your item can go to the beach without any extra concerns.

I apply mine like already said, mixed 1 to 1 with water, . . . but I brush it on with a cheap bristle brush, . . . lay it on, . . . spread it out, . . . add a little more usually, . . . brush up, brush down, brush left, brush right, . . . keep brushing lightly until all the bubbles are gone. Add additional coats if you will, . . .

May God bless,

Dwight
