Sewing 2 Pieces At 90° ?

Recommended Posts

So as I said somewhere in the forum, I want to make a camera case/body armor similar to this :

My question is : how is the bottom sewn at 90° to the sides ?

I have to mention that I'll be hand sewing this case.

Please help me because all I have tried so far only became a wobbly mess !

Bevel the edges at 45°, like a pictur frame and sew in the side, out the bottom, at least that's what I read in a Stohlman book, the art of making bags an cases, maybe in others too.

You need to check out Al Stohlman's The Art of Making Leather Cases, vol.1 (Tandy, ebay, Amazon).....I believe it's a "must have" for everyone of us on this forum.

He even shows you how to make a camera case very similar to the one you are making.

OK thanks for the tips.

I also found this guy on YouTube that is doing something similar.

For a rigid case I would be molding the leather over a form and then baking it in the oven.

That's definitely not the same as the picture you showed and what's up with his bangs?. The picture you showed is done with mitered edges and saddle stitched with a curved awl although you could get away with using a straight one too. As Rayban mentioned its in the Stohlman book, it is also in the "Art of handsewing book as well.

OK thanks for the tips.
