Pickup Man Chaps

Recommended Posts

Hello Fellow carvers!

I have a question about Rodeo Pickup men chaps. First off, how to make them. I've made chaps and chinks but my customer was telling me that they are extremely thick. Any one know where I can get plans and instructions to make them.

I can't speak for the actual patterns and thickness, however; like you I have made a lot of chaps and chinks for various uses. Naturally when I see someone wearing a pair, I look closely, and it has been my observation that pickup men wear what looks like a regular pair of batwing chaps with the exception that they are made out of what looks to be anywhere from 10 to 12 oz leather. That's simply what it appears to be from a distance. I am sure that you will get some good answers from some of the guys on here that actually rodeo.

Making pickup man chaps is like making two sets of chaps the outer layer is 3-4oz with the lining being 3-4oz with high density foam layered in between. The tops or yokes of the chaps 8oz. They are a bit of work. If you do a search on Leatherworkers.net for pickup man chaps I think you will find a thread or two with some examples.
