Buddytink Report post Posted February 13, 2013 (edited) I'm still pretty new to leatherwork. I've made some spur straps, and I've made a few Bronc Nose Halters. They turned out pretty good considering it was my first time and Im still lacking some tools LOL. Well right now I'm really wanting to get into the whole horse tack thing, like Breast Collars and Bridles mainly. But I'm unsure about what all tools I need. The only tools I have are a swivel knife, Awl, and box cutter and x-acto knife. And a few cheap stamps. So as you can see I'm lacking. I don't know what I need to finish the edges, to make the holes for the stitching etc. or the kind of leather I need? So was wondering if anyone could help me out?? Thanks in advance Edited February 13, 2013 by Buddytink
shtoink Report post Posted February 13, 2013 I'd give this thread a read, since it covers exactly what you are asking, but I'd also keep in mind that there absolutely no need to go out and get everything you think you might need all at one time. You can dig around at thrift shops, flea markets, estate sales, garage sales, and the like for used tools or just get some new ones as you need them. I would refrain from using a metal hammer to pound on your stamps with, since I don't see a rawhide mallet in your list. The metal hammer will mushroom the end of your punches. The list of tools you will want/need will be based on what projects you plan on doing. Also, you might have one idea when you start and find something else that'll interest you shortly after that.
