  1. Lol not the jewels part. The inlay and stitching and leather part. I like the shape of these bridles, with the gator and I've seen some with stingray etc used. I was thinking a strap cutter but I wasn't sure since this bridle isn't cut straight
  2. I've been wanting to make some bridle, breast, collars, and slobber straps and was wondering if anyone could give me a list of all the tools I would need to create these? I've made spur straps, but was lacking on a few tools, my edges didn't come out as clean as I would have liked, I used a dremel tool to smooth them out lol. But anyways my goal is to one day be able to make something like this
  3. I'm still pretty new to leatherwork. I've made some spur straps, and I've made a few Bronc Nose Halters. They turned out pretty good considering it was my first time and Im still lacking some tools LOL. Well right now I'm really wanting to get into the whole horse tack thing, like Breast Collars and Bridles mainly. But I'm unsure about what all tools I need. The only tools I have are a swivel knife, Awl, and box cutter and x-acto knife. And a few cheap stamps. So as you can see I'm lacking. I don't know what I need to finish the edges, to make the holes for the stitching etc. or the kind of leather I need? So was wondering if anyone could help me out?? Thanks in advance
  4. I'm looking at leather and I see both this http://springfieldleather.com/store/product/15778/Side%2CHarness%2CHot-Stf%2CBlk%2C10-12/ and this http://springfieldleather.com/store/product/15790/Side%2CLatigo%2CBurgundy%2C7-8oz/ I know I want my reins to be at least 7ft long. Would this leather be long enough and about how many reins could I get out of this side? Or is there some leather I can buy somewhere that has it in smaller quantities since I'm just starting out making reins?
  5. I'm not sure what kinda lacing it is. But it's something like this http://www.smithbrothers.com/cactus-harness-latigo-laced-barrel-rein/p/X3-0256/cn/919/ If I buy the leather does this kind of leather come in oz like the tooling leather or do they measure it a different way?
  6. I havent logged on in a while. The weather's been nice so I've been doing a lot of riding. I barrel Race LOL. Well During the winter I made some Spur straps and did a little carving, it turned out fairly well considering it was my first time. I didnt have all the tools needed to do a lot of finishing work. All I have are a box knife, swivel knife, and a tracing/spoon tool. So as a result the edges of my spurs straps aren't very straight or finished out but once I dyed them and they got dirty you can't really tell it. Oh and I made some bronc nosebands. And now I find myself back in house because of an injury and I can't stand sitting around, so I'm trying to find something to do LOL. So now I want to make some reins to run barrels in. I was gonna buy some, but since I can't ride for a while, I mines well try to make my own LOL. I'm thinking the the laced ones, but I'm not sure how to go about it. Is there any books or patterns that I can get that will show how to do the lacing? Also what kinda leather is the reins made out of?
  7. LOL never thought of that, but that sounds like it would work.
  8. I have been wanting a small spade stamp. Like the spade that is in a deck of cards. I've seen the larger size stamps, but those are too big. Does anyone know whre I can get a smaller size? I've been making them with a tracing tool right now, they turn out alright except the bottom of the spade looks a little "blocky."
  9. I was just wondering what size/thickness of leather is good for making spur straps. I made some out of 9-10oz veg. tan leather and they turned out pretty good LOL Im using them, but theyre a little stiff where they buckle together.
  10. I'm trying to make some horse tack and right now I have some 9/10z leather ordered and Im waiting for it to get here. Well I got wondering, If I want to make say a bridle, breast collar, or bronc nose halter and I want it to be inlayed or filigree, Do I still use the 9/10 oz leather, or do I use the 9/10oz leather for the part that will be tooled and then a really thin part for the back, or is both peices of leather (back and the front peice that is tooled) suppose to be the same thickness, just thinner, like both peices 4/5 oz?? Hope that makes since.
  11. Im needing some sharpening stones. Im just starting out so I don't know much about sharpening stones. I know that there is different grit and all and thats about it. Do I have to use a stone to sharpen my tools or can i use sandpaper? Is there anywhere where I can buy a set of them or something so that I could have a little bit of everything when it comes to the different grits?
  12. Im wanting to get some Herman Oak leather so that I can practice tooling, and all that I can find is 24sq ft of the stuff for $100+ dollars. Does anyone know where I can buy it by the sq ft?
  13. Thanks for the advice and info! I will def. NOT be buying a rubyat blade LOL.
  14. So I've been doing a lot of reading and watching youtube videos on leatherwork, and I've decided that now I think Im ready to start actually trying it out. So I figured I'd buy a Swivel knife so that I can start practicing. My goal is to eventually be able to make horse tack (bridles, breast collars, bronc nose halters to start) I figrued I'd go with this Swivel knife first, what do yall think? Im' not sure on what blade to buy with it though. I thought about maybe buying a Rubyat blade first, since they do not have to be sharpened, just so I can practice, but dont know where to buy those sort of blades or what size? http://www.barrykingtools.com/swivelknives.htm And I dont know what kind or where I should buy some leather, I just need something to practice on that will be close to what I will actually be doing later, so if anyone has any suggestions there, I'd apprieciate it as well.
  15. Where do you buy the buckles and stuff for horse tack at? I've noticed Lowes doesnt carry them LOL
  16. This is a pic of one of my saddles. And I was wondering if anyone knew what the tooling design would be called? Im thinking its Celeste?? Also what sort of tools will I need to make this design? Thanks
  17. What is a good tool to use for Filigreeing leather? Im thinking a Bevel Point Knife, but Im not sure, Ive never done it?
  18. Im having a hard time deciding on what size edge beveler I should buy. Im going to be making horse tack (bridles, breast collars, bronc halters).
  19. So I'm about to start buying some tools, and I'll have to buy a little bit at a time. I'm wanting to start making belts, bridles and breast collars. Anyone have any ideas on where I can get good tools or any specific brand etc. Thanks!
  20. Are you suppose to dye the leather, and then paint the painted part? Or paint then dye??
  21. I know that you can dye leather and all, but I was wondering if leather can be painted and it actually stay on? The leather would be dyed the main color but then parts of it would need to be a color.
  22. I've seen some bronc halters that have hair on hide in the center? (guess that's what they call it) anyways, I got wondering, how do they get it in there? I'm thinking it's 2 thin pieces of leather with the hair on hide in the middle, and then the 3 pieces sewn together? And then the top piece of leather is cut out in whatever design so that the hide will show?? Is that how it's done or am I WAY off lol.
  23. Ive never done any kind of leather work, but I've always wanted to, just dont know where to start. I would like to make horse tack, like; bridles, breast collars, bronc halters, etc (smaller stuff at first) Ive been thinking that maybe I should get some books, but when I start looking for books there are a TON of them. So does anyone have any ideas on what some good books are for beginners that want to get into making horse tack?? (I'd also have to learn about the different tools to use as well, so would the book tell me about this as well??)
  24. Thanks for the info! I dont think I have a Tandy store nearby, will check though. Im so excited, I was dreaming about it in my sleep LOL
  25. Ok Ive ALWAYS LOVED horse tack LOL. For Christmas, I wanted to go to a tack store that was out of state LOL mainly just to look. Well Im tired of looking and I wanna start making my own now, The only problem is, Ive never made anything with leather Ive made rope halters and have always wanted to make other tack, bridles, bronc halters, breast collars and maybe some day my own saddle (saddle WAAY on down the line though). I dont have a leather sewing machine so I cant really do anything too fancy. Im thinking at first I should start out with something simple and make a bronc halter nose peice or a bridle. I'd like for them to have some sort of design engraved into the leather. Im going to hold it all together with glue and skrews, since I cant sew into the leather. So "What all do I need as far as tools go to do this?" and "How do you know how much, what kind, and how thick of leather you'll need? Im only making a bridle and a nose piece to a bronc halter.
