Sizing Belts

Recommended Posts

I am having some problems figuring out the size I should make a belt when I just have someones pants size. If anyone has any pointers, they would be greatly appreciated.

Before making a belt for somebody I send them this, and ask for the measurement (stole picture from somebody here). I had somebody swear up and down they were a 46" waist and to just make the hole at 46 inches for them. When they measured to the hole they used most often, it was 49". If I would have just listened to them for their waist size, they would have had a completely unusable belt.

In a nutshell, . . . you can't. Smokecigars laid it out for you.

I have never ceased to be amazed at how many guys wear 36 jeans with a 42 belt.

You can also look at my belt page on my website, . . . tells a similar story on how to measure properly for a belt.

May God bless,

Dwight

I never go by pants size as everyone else has mentioned. It does pose a problem when a woman comes into the shop and wants to buy her husband a belt. I have on occasion just added 3 inches to thier pants size, sometimes 4 and ill put 6 or 7 holes instead of 5 but I really don't like doing it and I only agree to do it after clearly explaining to them I'm can't exchange it if it doesn't fit and that's usually only when they insist. I only take those chances on occasion and only on a single layer belt that I don't have much time into. I'd never risk doing a double layer or a tooled belt that way.

I have them measure as per the previously posted diagram on online orders and I measure the same way if its someone that comes into my shop. I also have a really long belt that's the length of a side of leather that has a series of holes that are all numbered that I can have them put on and measure them that way. Its also a good conversation piece as I often get big guys who ask if I can make a belt to fit them and I pull that out.

I had a big guy come in one time and ask about a belt. It wound up being 60 something inch's long. He got two because he couldn't find one anywhere that fit.

When I read this post this morning, just a quick look at it, I misinterpreted it and thought he bought 2 shorter belts to make up the total length! It reminded me of a story about my great great grandfather. He lived in North Dakota, ranching. He was a large man, took size 14 boots. He ordered a pair of size 14 boots from the Sears Roebuck mail order catalog. When the parcel finally arrived, he opened it and found some smart aleck had sent 2 pairs of size 7 boots!
