Members EmbossingDieCompany Posted March 17, 2013 Members Report Posted March 17, 2013 I'm usings Fiebings Marine Corp black dye and after letting it dry for an hour, I buffed it before applying the Ox Blood die.......however, the black smeared all over the tooling leather.......is there any way to prevent this? Contributing Member TwinOaks Posted March 17, 2013 Contributing Member Report Posted March 17, 2013 The only way to prevent it in small areas like that is to mask off the other areas before buffing. You might also consider the Oil dye....USMC black is notorious for the amount of rub off it leaves. Members Cyberthrasher Posted March 17, 2013 Members Report Posted March 17, 2013 I've never tried USMC for that reason. Quote hellhoundkustoms.wordpress.com www.facebook.com/hellhoundkustoms www.etsy.com/shop/HellhoundKustoms
Members mikesmith648 Posted March 17, 2013 Members Report Posted March 17, 2013 I would also let it dry overnight.........it will not completely dry in an hour! Quote Emergency Room Nurse by profession.......Leatherworker at heart!! Hoping to reverse the order in that one of these days!!
Members EmbossingDieCompany Posted March 17, 2013 Author Members Report Posted March 17, 2013 Haha Mike! That's what I thought, which was why I mentioned it.......I was a little impatient today! I'll try the oil dye too Mike.....thanks! Also, is there a better mask than blue painter's tape? The dye bled a little. Contributing Member TwinOaks Posted March 17, 2013 Contributing Member Report Posted March 17, 2013 I've used the liquid latex used for model molding....found at hobby lobby....it WILL mask very well, but requires multiple coats. And....after several hours of fine detailed layering of diluted dyes to get just what I wanted, I found out that the liquid latex WILL remove all the dye from your carefully masked area. Be sure to seal your dye if you plan to mask over it. Quote Mike DeLoach Esse Quam Videri (Be rather than Seem) "Don't learn the tricks of the trade.....Learn the trade." Contributing Member TwinOaks Posted March 18, 2013 Contributing Member Report Posted March 18, 2013 Regular spririt dye....on a tandy purse kit....,looooong time ago, and I'm not ruling out user error either. But I have used it to pull dye off a spot or two since. Quote Mike DeLoach Esse Quam Videri (Be rather than Seem) "Don't learn the tricks of the trade.....Learn the trade."
