paprhangr Report post Posted April 25, 2013 I'm holding off on the final finish on this 2nd seat I'm a little confused about finishes? A motorcycle Seat needs: 1. a sealer that protects the dyed leather from rain / sweat 2. Prefer one that is not high gloss Resolene has been recommended but will it crack? Any suggestions? Thanks
Cyberthrasher Report post Posted April 25, 2013 Resolene won't crack if it's applied correctly. It should be applied in a few LIGHT coats thinned 50/50 with water. Another one that's highly recommended is Pecard's Leather Dressing. I haven't used it myself and I'm not sure if it should be used on its own or on top of another product. I have a small sample of it sitting here, just haven't put it on anything yet to see how it performs. But, the guy who gave me the sample uses it religiously for all of his motorcycle gear he produces.
paprhangr Report post Posted April 25, 2013 Thanks cyber Anyone used Master Quick Shine After using resolene is it necessary to rub mink oil, Aussie, neets foot To keep leather soft?????
Cyberthrasher Report post Posted April 25, 2013 After using resolene is it necessary to rub mink oil, Aussie, neets foot To keep leather soft????? You can. I wouldn't say it's necessary per say. Resolene will seal the leather, so it's harder for any of that stuff to get to the leather to do its thing. I do apply Montana Pitch Blend to a lot of my stuff that's got Resolene on it and just let it sit over night. Eventually the oils in the MPB soak through and leave a wax finish on top. If I remember, I'll see if I can search for a previous thread that had lots of details on finishing/protecting motorcycle seats. Since I haven't made any that have seen the road, most of my input is based on the personal use of leather products on motorcycles and my efforts to protect my guitar straps from stray beer

benlilly1 Report post Posted May 3, 2013 Did it eventually lighten up as time went on?
paprhangr Report post Posted May 3, 2013 (edited) It's been 20 hrs did not lighten. Here pic shows quite a bit of contrast but it does leave the leather soft and supple Edited May 3, 2013 by paprhangr

cloverpatch Report post Posted May 18, 2013 I am new to leather work, and don't make seats, but your examples look wonderful to me! Would you tell me which W&C you used. It looks so good that I'd guess their English Bridle. Thanks for sharing your photos and comments.
David8386 Report post Posted May 19, 2013 Very nice, I like the color and lacing on this one. Good craftsmanship. David
paprhangr Report post Posted May 19, 2013 Thanks for the encouraging comments. the leather is good looking, its W&C's Tooling/Holster/Carving Natural Utility 7oz its pricey 25.2 sq.ft shipped = $192.51 and they have raised their price sense then I made a fiberglass mold of the steel seat pan I used on this seat, stuff is really strong can be made as strong as needed with several layers, its light weight and can be shaped to fit any frame, kinda fun to work with
