White On Black?

Hi Guys, As a total newbee, I acquired some black leather to practice stamping/carving on, now I am starting is there a method of transfering a design onto black so it is visible to carve?

I am assuming its pre dyed leather? In that case you will not be able to tool/stamp it.

It just depends on what it is. If it is Bridle, Harness, or Latigo, then results will not be as desired. However, if it is just drum dyed veg tan, it should case and you should be able to carve/stamp it. If it is thick, then it might not have been "struck through", which means the dye didn't get all the way through to the center. In this case, carving and stamping might bring-up the native color. This can be fixed by airbrushing some dye over parts that have been brought up. Cut off a small piece and try to case and tool it, you'll know soon enough.

I'm still new as well, and just tried to stamp a small piece of a black latigo belt. I skipped the mallet and went right to the Arbor press. I dipped the small piece into a cup of water for 2-3 seconds and then pressed it. It did a great job. I actually pressed it a bit to hard ( still getting used to it) but it left a nice deep impression.
