I've never made armor. But i would get some poster board and start fitting to your model, you will need to leave a tail on the patterns so you can sew / rivet one piece to the next. It may take a couple of tries to get things right, but in the end you of made your own pattern of your own design. Go for it !!!

a common way to attach them together is to run a few strips of thinner leather (or flat nylon belt ) on the underside. Its riveted to the leather underneath the overlap so you cant really see the rivets. It keeps it more flexible then if you rivet the pieces together. http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=16175 its a different design but it shows the straps on the underside. You would just make the strips longer and continue them from one piece to the next.

I've only made one set of armor, . . . imitating the Roman stuff around the time of Jesus, . . . this is how I did the shoulders, . . . and it worked real good.

May God bless,

Dwight

I appreciate all the responses. I was thinking the strap down the middle made perfect sense, just wondered if leather would be the best idea with it being next to the skin. Sweat plays hell on leather. I like the design Dwight has...That will be more than likely the way I go...Thank you all. Now to play with design and development... Guess once I make one, I hope someone else wants one.

If you have a Tandy store nearby, . . . ask for their bag liner material. It is used to stiffen hand bags.

I use it often for patterns, . . . and to mimic leather. AND cutting it up is a whole lot cheaper than cutting up veggie tanned cowhide.

Also, . . . while the strap idea is good, . . . cloth flexes a lot more than leather generally, . . . it would depend on how "flippy-floppy" you want it to be.

When I did my armor, it was for one of my other personas: that of Salvatorus Antonio, . . . the Centurion of Capernaum, . . . 6th Legion, Ferata, . . . 39 AD. I did not want the shoulder plates shifting, . . . that is the reason for the "T" plates.

May God bless,

Dwight

I have a pattern here for spaulders. http://1of1designs.net/Spaulders1.pdf http://1of1designs.net/Spaulders2.pdf

It isn't done yet, but it should be easy to figure out based on the pattern.

I finally scanned my pattern, sorry that it took so long. If you use these, download them and print them out full-size. If your printer tells you that the image will exceed the paper size just ignore it and continue rather than resizing to fit the paper.

I could only fit half of the largest piece on the scanner, but it is symmetric so just print another, flip it, and tape them together.

Rivet holes are also marked on the pattern.

I made this to attach to a breast plate so there is no shoulder strap, but I'd imagine it would be easy enough to alter it a bit for your needs.

Also attaching finished pics for reference.

Cheers.

Others have mentioned the strap underneath idea, and I second that. I made similar pauldrons with hardened leather riveted together to pivot and it took me two days to do the math for the rivet placement and piece dimensions (if the pieces can slip past eachother they will look sloppy and uneven).

As for the lining/smell, just line the straps and the plate that hold to your chest. Everything else won't touch the skin much. I actually lined mine with vehicle headliner fabric and pig suede (yes, more leather). The pig suede doesn't smell awful, buy has taken on 'human' odor. Then again, I wear mine shirtless so I don't sweat much. You may have a different experience if you are fully garbed.

Old thread, but do you happen to have a pattern in PDF?

Sorry for reviving an old thread but I have a question for DLC about his pattern. Do you have a strap on peice one where the pyramid studs are or is it just left as is?
