Looking 2-3Oz Hermann Oak In Australia

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, I'm new here but I've been doing leathercrafting for about a year now. I'm making a nice wallet for a birthday present and I was wondering if anybody has or could suggest a place to order 2-3 Hermann Oak tooling side in Australia? I've searched for days and contacted several different companies but not many of them have 2-3 oz in stock and the ones that do won't ship overseas. If someone has 2-3oz Hermann Oak or Wickett sides for sale please give me a msg, I'd be very keen to buy. Thank you for your time :)

There are only a couple of agents in Australia for Herman Oak and so it is difficult to get the thicknesses you want. Birdsall currently have 3-4oz and I can't say I've ever seen them stock 2-3oz or the other one of Ozsaddle either. I now buy my Hermann Oak from Springfield Leather in the US cut for the size I need as neither of the ones here have that service, not sure if they do 2-3oz though as I only use the thicker stuff.

Is there any reason why you only want Hermann Oak or Wickett Craig as NSW leather do have 2-3oz in their range. I buy Hermann Oak because the majority of the stuff I make is carved and I like it the best for that after having tried a few others.

Just one thing if you plan on carving or tooling the wallet you might be better off with 3-4oz for the back and using something thinner for the pockets as it's really easy to go through 2-3oz when carving or tooling.

Hi Cem, thank you for your help :). I ended up ordering from panhandle leather from the states a few days ago. I was looking for a quality veg tan side so Hermann Oak came to my mind first but I would have been happy with Wickett and Craig (I didn't know about NSW leather). I'm planning to use it for an inner of a purse/wallet and I'll be using a 4-5oz for the outer. It's going to have over 10 layers of leather so I thought it's probably best to get something light.

For your future consideration Wickett & Craig will honor as little as a one side order, and they do have a split to order service, so you can buy anything you want and have it split to any thickness you desire. I use 7/8 and 2/3 in four colors, Russet, Chestnut, Brown and Black. All the colors carve and tool beautifully. I buy the utility grade saddle skirting and have been a repeat customer for about 20 to 30 sides a year for about 8 years. I formerly used Herman Oak, but like the W&C just as well with the added advantage of the drum dyed colors.

What I am not sure of is if they ship to Australia, but it would be worth an email to find out I think.

Thanks for the tip Paul! I've already purchased what I needed from Panhandle but I'll definitely keep them in mind in the future :)

Not yet there in Malaga, I did buy from them when they were in Perth city and Osborne Park. Their leather is nice, I just prefer the way Herman Oak carves for what I do though. Am hoping to get down there soon to check the new place out, wish they were open on the weekends so I could drop in on the way to the ice hockey as the ice rink for the Perth Thunder is just up the road.
