Members jk215 Posted July 15, 2013 Members Report Posted July 15, 2013 Hello all. Im a long time hand stitcher getting the itch for a sewing machine. Ive been searching the forums but all of this is still really new to me and a bit overwhelming. Ive noticed a Singer 31-15 and Consew 225 in my local classifieds and want to know if either would be suitable for my needs. My goods are almost exclusivley wallets and card holders using 2/3oz veg tan or chromexcel. That could possibly jump up to 4/5 oz chromexcel for bags. Would either of those sewing machines work for me? Obviously the Singer is a bit cheaper so that would be nice but that isnt the end all be all of my decision. I am also open to modifications if need be. Any help is appreciated! Quote
Moderator Wizcrafts Posted July 15, 2013 Moderator Report Posted July 15, 2013 I own both a 31-15 and a walking foot machine and I strongly recommend that you test the Consew 225 and buy it if it works as designed. The 31-15 is a tailor's machine that can be altered to sew leather (change feed dog, presser foot, throat plate, add more clearance in shuttle driver, dink with bobbin case retainer ring). The 225 is already made to sew leather, up to 3/8 inch, with up to #138 thread (possibly even #207 on top). Quote
