paulc Report post Posted August 23, 2013 Any suggestions on what weight leather would be good for a tooled ladies handbag? I know veg tanned is needed for the tooling, but I'm not sure of the weight. I'm using Tandy's "Downtowner" pattern which has Sheridan-type tooling on the back/front flap section, a separate front that's not tooled and a gusset for the sides. Possibly a heavier weight for the tooled parts and a lighter weight for the rest??
electrathon Report post Posted August 23, 2013 Possibly a heavier weight for the tooled parts and a lighter weight for the rest?? Depending on the depth you want to tool to, heavier may be better for the tooled panel. If you are just going to buy leather though, 6/7 would be good. Matt Alsaker Report post Posted August 24, 2013 I've done lids for smaller bags using 6/7 and lids for bigger saddlebag style bags using 8/9. I wouldn't go any thinner than 6/7. I lined both lids with 2/3 (lamb or calf). I use 2/3 for all credit card slots.
