benlilly1 Report post Posted September 9, 2013 I'm considering getting another sewing machine to handle my lighter weight leather projects. I found this on Craigslist. I would like someone to tell me what the extra parts are. These photos are from the ad so hopefully you can tell what they are.
thesergeant Report post Posted September 9, 2013 Looks like a Singer 99k, which is a 3/4 size machine. The attachment are the standard Singer variety, buttonholer, ruffler, rolled hem foot, etc. Most of them will be of no use to you except for perhaps the Buttonholer. The Singer straight stitch machines with button hole attachments make incredible buttonholes. I gave my mother a Singer 15-91 with a button hole attachment for her birthday earlier this year and the thing she was most excited about was the attachment, lol. I'd pass on the machine if I were you. If you're going to get a vintage singer home machine I'd suggest a Singer 15-91 or a 15-125. You should be able to get one in running condition for under $100 but inspect the wiring from the motor. It'll likely be rotted so that's something you might want to replace. This is the machine you want:
benlilly1 Report post Posted September 9, 2013 Thanks for the info Sergeant! I'll keep my eye out for a Singer 15-91 or a 15-125.
pcox Report post Posted September 9, 2013 A 31-15 singer would make you a nice machine.
Wizcrafts Report post Posted September 9, 2013 I own a Singer 15-91. The first thing I had to do after lubing it was to rebuild the potted motor and replace the wires. This became a messy and expensive operation. Then, the foot speed control lost its slow speed range and had to be replaced with a new one. This doubled the cost of the machine before it ever sewed a stitch for me. Your $100 investment could easily double if these items need replacing. Besides, decent running models that have already been rebuilt sell for $200 and up.
Singermania Report post Posted September 16, 2013 The boys are right, thats just a home machine, really no good for leather. If you want something period in Singer then the Singer 16 and 42 ranges have walking feet, another good Singer is the 331K
Darren Brosowski Report post Posted September 29, 2013 The 42-5 is the most underrated machine around.

Singermania Report post Posted September 30, 2013 er... is it the email address?? My address is freely available on my website, and ebay etc.. I get so much junk mail and scammers now... more couldn't make much difference. Can't see how to edit it anyway. Regards Steve

If you ever decide to change the email address used on your website and here, contact me for a better solution, which the email harvesters cannot usually detect. If at all possible, do not type out your email addresses in plain text, or as clickable "mailto" links. Obfuscate them so people can use them, but bots cannot. Singermania Report post Posted September 30, 2013 Thanks Wiz, I get a bit lazy sometimes, often I write it out long hand, but then sometimes people don't understand what it means. I s'pose I should be more vigiliant as I was a computer operator, analyst programmer, systems analyst and then over in England I had a computer company selling and repairing pcs, faxes, laser copiers etc.... I noticed over on another leather forum that the resident guys don't disguise their emails??? not sure why.... maybe they change them from time to time. Thanks again. Wizcrafts Report post Posted October 1, 2013 I only use Javascript or images for email addresses I use on my websites. Better yet, I provide contact forms that send to a numeric recipient, rather than an email account. The Perl script converts the number into the desired actual email addy. If I have to reveal an account on a forum, I obfuscate it and let the readers recompile it into a usable address. Example: Ping me at joe-blow at example dot com when you get time. I do not use the old style where one inserts underscores before and after the @ symbol. Most harvester bots know how to remove those things. Not ending the sentence with the word com (or net, or org, etc) makes it harder for advanced scrapers to locate and actual obfuscated address. Better still, invite other members to contact you through the private message system of the forum. Be sure to active this feature in your account. Singermania Report post Posted October 1, 2013 Hi Wiz, will do it long hand next time. I already get a lot of junk mail, however it comes in via my old website and some surveys that my wife has filled in. When scammers write, I ask for their mother's address and they never write back.
