jus10 Report post Posted October 19, 2013 I got some German made 0.8 mm braided tiger thread from a guy in Canada on the way (its not sold in the US) and was wondering if anyone has experience with sizes of braided thread measured in MM . I'm just used to the "ply" or number of strands that are twisted together . Is 0.8 MM larger then 3 ply nylon ? I looked around for "tiger thread " on the site but all I found was someone asking about it and being told "it must be some cheap Chinese crap" that's not the case btw its german and people in Europe swear its the best
Undeadzombiehunter Report post Posted October 19, 2013 I have found it hard to machine sew with. While my 45k would easily sew m8 or thicker, it struggled with the braid. I think this is due to a number of reasons. When being fed from the bobbin, it lies flat, and therefore gets a twist as it feeds through the spring of the bobbin. Is quite thin on the flat while a couple of mm's wide. I think it also struggled to form a loop for the hook to catch. I have given up on machine sewing it, though i understand others have had some success. I use it exclusively now for hand stitching. Tony
jus10 Report post Posted October 20, 2013 All I do is hand stitch I'm really new to the craft (2-3) weeks and love it over oil paintings which I've basically quit doing . Why spend money and time on something that goes on a wall when I can make art that is used ? I want something that will really fill the holes up using my stitching chisel I use the smallest awl and these new holes seem large compared to it . If it seems too thin I guess I can get some 4 or 5 ply thread .Does anyone have an opinion on the stuff from Maine ? I would like a nice thread since the price difference between Tandy's Stiff and top shelf is minimal

electrathon Report post Posted October 20, 2013 Tiger thread is very good. There are a number of threads here. .8 or 1mm are both good depending on what you are sewing. I can send some samples for a few dollars. It is pretty cheap, you could have bought a spool of it for twice what you paid for the sample.
jus10 Report post Posted October 20, 2013 I got 20 yards on the way that should last me a while since I won't use the color on everything . How much does an entire spool go for ? It's coming from Canada and I'm in TN so I have no idea how long that takes its been 6-7days
jus10 Report post Posted October 20, 2013 If your in the US with multiple colors and have an eBay account I and I bet many others would like to buy less then a spool of different colors .Red would be nice but it would take me years to use a whole spool of red for example. I mainly use dark brown and have cream on the way.

I don't use nylon a lot the 3 ply I've got is 415 and is about 0.8mm, my digital calipers need a new battery so I can't give you an exact thickness.I mainly use 1mm and 1.2 mm Tiger for what I do 0.8 will be fine for most things. I tend to do heavier stuff so like thicker thread. Tiger thread can be bought in America from Windmill English Saddle Supply, I am unsure as to what colours they stock though as I buy from Abbey England. After you have tried your sample and if you like it it's more economical to buy it in the rolls. I have found it hard to machine sew with. Tony Tiger/Ritza 25 thread is for hand sewing if you want to do machine sewing you need the Ritza 44 which is also available from Abbey.
jus10 Report post Posted October 20, 2013 I think I'll get some thread from this co. In Maine think its Maine thread co. Or something like that I have it book marked they have up to 6 ply twist and a lot of color and material options an is made in the US .In the description it gives the ply number and measurement number if I'm not mistaken . I just hope the .8Mm fills the holes Nicley from my tandy stitching chisel each prong seems to be 1.5-2 mm wide but the holes come out to about 1mm but I'm using a ruler to measure that and MM is pretty small
