How To Do An Adjustable Knot?

Recommended Posts

I'm making some leather jewelry and more for veterinary cost to a non profit organization and I need help with an adjustable knot/closure for these items. I enclose a picture collage of what I had in mind. I’ll be ever so grateful for any help in this matter//Tina

You might try this site, he does hundreds of different knots, and fun to watch too!

It looks like two barrel knots... To try it out, tie a half hitch on the rope/lace with one end. Then tie another half hitch with the "running end" back onto itself. They should slide and sort of cinch down as you pull them away from each other and loosen as you pull them together. Hope that made sense...

I am definitely not an authority but what came to mind was the fisherman's knot (either a double or a triple). If you tie it fairly tight then it would definitely hold but over time it will eventually loosen. But... when it is loose you can always retie it and tighten it up again.

I had never heard of the barrel knot before the earlier post so I looked it up and found this:

It would probably be a good idea if you are going to do more items like this to look into macrame since there will probably be a lot of overlap.

Enjoy,

Dave :)

It depends on the strength you require.

A double fishermans will work but you won't be able to load it because it will pull back together until the two knots lock.

A prusik knot or blakes hitch will lock under load and is adjustable.

I have actually seen hundreds of "trinkets" on adjustable neck cords where the knots were nothing more than a simple overhand knot tied in both ends around the other. They seemed secure enough in the cord that was used but probably would not hold well at all in synthetic cord or leather. I have no personal experience with the setup though.

I found a very nice tutorial that'll work for what I had in mind: http://artbeadscene.blogspot.se/2012/02/free-tutorial-sliding-knot-adjustable.html

I hope this will help someone else :-)

That's a whip finish used for rope ends.

It's designed to lock, that's why they tell you not to tighten it too much.
