Newbie Needs Advice

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!

I'm very new to working with leather. My first project was a book cover. I used 5 or 6 oz of scrap lace leather and was able to cut two book covers from this. The leather was firm but pliable and I liked the overall look. It came already dyed a nice brown and I rubbed mink oil into it as it looked dry before the mink oil (I'm not sure if this the correct thing to do). After cutting, I used a leather dye on the edges. My questions:

1. Where is the best place to buy more scrap lace leather approx 10x13 (smallest usable size) or larger?

2. What other leather do you recommend? I like the texture of the lace leather.... irregular and rugged looking.

3. What tool do you recommend to punch rounded corners by hand?

4. If I decide to do some top stitching or sew a pocket on the inside, what is the least expensive option for a walking type sewing machine? I've looked at vintage all metal sewing machines (old singers primarily) on ebay that "clam" they can handle leather but other reviews say not.

Thanks so much for taking the time to read my questions and any advice you can offer would be much appreciated!

Hello Donna....welcome to forum. In regards to your questions, I would strongly consider contacting one of our forum sponsors listed above. Springfield Leather Company has all the accessories you may possibly need to include sewing machines. Give them a call and pose them with your questions. I believe they can help you locate what you need. Good luck.

Old singers will sew lightweight leather. May leave marks on the back due to the feed dogs.

If you are serious about sewing leather, get a walking foot machine. Look at the dealer ads at the top of the page here. Each time you refresh the page you will see new ads, so you can flip through and see who is who.

Thank you Kings X. I have contacted Springfield Leather to see if they can help. Thank you Tom... do you know the best old singer that may work? I've spent a lot of time looking but it all gets confusing after a while.
