johnggrg Report post Posted December 15, 2013 Hi everyone. Had an idea today to make a despenser for my thread. To keep it free of dust or anything. Then I thought ifI made it big enough to hold 3 4oz rolls of thread. But they would have to stamd on a wooden rod so it can spin. Then I would need a hole half way up where the spool would be. Start the thread threw the hole and pull out what's needed and cut it off. I think it would work. Also if big enough for 3 spools I could have all 3 colors I use ready to go. Just pull and snip. So I was thinking one to mount to the wall would be good. But make it out of leather. So what do you think? Would it be a cool project? Any suggestions? Sporq Report post Posted December 15, 2013 (edited) Gimme a day or two to figure out where I put the thing, and I will show you what I made. It's pretty much exactly what you want, in terms of function, but freestanding, made of wood, and could use a couple of modifications most likely. Pics to come when I find it. For now, I'll try to describe it for ya. It's a wooden base with two arms coming up from it, holding a wooden bar across the top between them, with 3 holes in the bar for the thread to go through. The base has 3 vertical wooden dowels sticking out of it that the thread cones sit on and can spin freely without toppling over. I designed it for the 3,000yard thread spools for fabric sewing, but it could easily be designed for leather thread. The way I have it, the thread is fed directly into my sewing machine from the stand, and it feeds just fine. You might want to add something to hold the thread when not in use, since you won't be using a machine. Edited December 15, 2013 by Sporq
johnggrg Report post Posted December 15, 2013 Thank's for the reply. All hand sewing here. I would like to make it inclosed so the thread is in the box or bag. I was thinking about making it to go onthe wall and when I need some just walk up pull out what I need and cut it off. I was thinking about a 3/4 piece of pine with 3 wood posts spaced out just right. Width will depend on width of a full spool of thred times 3. Then maybe a leather outside to it. Place a grommet for the thread to come out in the middle front for middle spool and one on each side for the other spools. With opening on top to replace spools. A wall hanger would be nice. Tree Reaper Report post Posted December 15, 2013 A piece of plastic conduit comes to mind with two end caps. Cut a narrow slot the length of the thread spool (or spools) in the middle for the thread and make a saddle for it to sit in or use U bolts. You can cut the pipe as long as you want to accommodate as many rolls as you want. You pull on the thread and it free spools inside the pipe.
Sporq Report post Posted December 17, 2013 I found my dispenser after looking everywhere for it. It was right beside me all along, in a box, almost at the top. I just noticed it this morning x.x I'll have pics in a bit.
Banjoza Report post Posted January 7, 2014 Plastic honey/jam jar with a hole punched in the centre of the lid. Transparent so you can see how much is left in there. Fasten to one of the uprights of your stitching pony with a big elastic band or two. No pictures, sorry. My phone (camera) is broken.
