I'm pretty new to this, but I have a few simple projects under my belt so far (kindle case, card holder etc). Apparently my work looks good enough that my girlfriend is trusting me to make her an envelope-style clutch. I'm hoping to make something in this style: http://treasurenest.com.au/store/images/envelope%20clutch%20rust.jpg , but I can't quite figure out how to stitch the bottom flap of the envelope. It doesn't seem like there will be enough room to pass needles through for a regular saddle stitch.

Any tips for this newbie would be appreciated.

You can do that with a curved needle.

If you start at the bottom of the envelope then it's easy enough. Make the stitch loosely with the flap held open and then tighten. If you're careful you'll easily get it done without needing special needles.

I have a piece like that. You can saddle stitch the whole thing with straight needles. One side is easy to conceptualize, right? The other is not much different once you understand that you will always be stitching away from the closed space. It's just a matter of switching hand priority.
