When To Change Needle In A Boss?

Recommended Posts

I know this is the wrong forum but I need a quick answer if possible.

I am using a Boss with 277 nylon thread and 794-200-S needles. I mostly do belts and holsters. How often should I change the needle. Is there a way to tell when it gets dull? Should I be looking for a change on how it comes out on the back side. Its not easy going through 3 layers of 8/9 so Im not sure I could tell if it gets a little harder pushing the needle through.

(and yes I know if it breaks change it.)

Thanks

Michael

Mike, . . . I very seldom have 3 layers of 8/9, . . . and I use 346 almost exclusively, . . . but quite honestly, old gorilla arms here will normally break the doggone thing long before it gets dull enough to need changing.

Look on Tippmann's website, . . . get the phone number, . . . ask for Ben, . . . tell him the details, . . . if anyone can answer your question, . . . he be da man !

May God bless,

Dwight

I change them when the stitches start acting funny. Maybe once every half pound of top thread or so. Sometimes sooner after doing a bunch of stingray or gator. They tend to dull the needles out quicker. You can pretty much see when the needle gets rounded over.

Even ground flat it will still punch through the leather and make a stitch, albeit a bit ugly.

Thanks Dwight, Shooter, I normally dont have 3 layers of 8/9 either but it was a welt in a special situation.

I tried the finger test. It still felt sharp so I didnt change it.
