harry phillips Report post Posted January 7, 2014 I've made a tote from 3oz. Veg. Tanned leather. I finished it with antiquing gel. It has a tooled/dyed design . I've tried neetsfoot oil in the past and it bleed through to the front and didn't look well. Tried a leather conditioner, lexol, same results. Thanks Harry you can see in the photo on the right side some discoloration caused by conditioner used on inside.
Ferg Report post Posted January 8, 2014 I think you are attempting to use the wrong product in the wrong way When using the oil it should be applied to the outside of the item. You will need to apply a "finish" product that seals as well as finishing the leather. You may have some problems with your selection of color product either way. Some testing on a piece of scrap would be well advised. ferg
Jwalker Report post Posted January 9, 2014 (edited) agree with ferg....very light coat of oil on grain side....and i only oil to bring out the reds in leather for sherdan finish....otherwise, oil really is not needed- depends on how well you control the moisture content while tooling- as moisture evaporates it leaches out some of the fat liquors n oils used in tanning Edited January 9, 2014 by Jwalker
