Advice On What To Buy

Recommended Posts

I need to purchase a second sewing machine - one that will do light leather. I have a Cobra 4, but it won't do the light weight items. Mostly, I'll be using 4-5 oz veg tan lined with lamb or deerskin. I'd like to be able to do decorative overstitching also. Suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

It sounds like you need a flat bed walking foot machine, like this one.

If that is not gentle enough, maybe a needle feed straight stitch machine will do the trick.

Otherwise, any straight stitch machine equipped with a roller foot.

A flatbed or cylinder walking foot machine will serve you well for light and medium weight leather items. Consider a cylinder bed with an optional flatbed attachment if you're sewing bags and want the versatility that a cylinder bed provides - really helpful for sewing the insides of bags and getting into tight areas.

Dealers sponsoring this website who supply these machines - Artisan, Cobra, TechSew.

Thank you Ron and Robert. I will call Tech Sew and Cobra today in addition to Toledo. Ron, can you advise me on a particular Tech Sew machine to look at? Any chance you have a used machine that would suit my needs? Many thanks

Yes, you can look at the Techsew 106 (flatbed) or Techsew 2700 (cylinder). We do have some used machines too, give us a call and we'll find you something.

Spent several minutes typing a post that has just evaporated.

Long story short: there are lots of second hand ex-factory machines out there but the cost of getting them up to scratch can be more than buying a new, fully supported machine from a dealer.

You can also look at the Cowboy model 0797, Cobra Class 17 or Techsew 0302 machines. These machines are walking foot machines and work for exceedingly well for lightweight to medium weight materials. The price is also less than the compound feeders.
