Shaunread Report post Posted January 16, 2014 Im looking into making leather Satchels etc... and Im stuck between what type of leather would be suitable. Im not talking about colour or pattern, I mean the thickness of the leather to use. I have no idea which would be best suited so I'd like opinions from anybody who could help if possible! I dont want to get an unsuitable thickness of leather and waste my money so you can understand why im asking for help Thanks
Dwight Report post Posted January 16, 2014 (edited) The very best thing for you to do, . . . go to a leather shop that sells the type satchel you want to reproduce. Find the one that has the right feel, . . . size, . . . weight, . . . in YOUR opinion. Take a dial caliper with you and measure the thickness. Then remember we are talking inches here not millymeteres. Convert the decimal fraction of the thickness into a fraction of 64ths, . . . 3/64ths, . . . 7/64ths, . . . etc. The number of 64ths is the oz weight of the leather. Then just go to the leather store near by, . . . tell em what you want to make, . . . let em show you what they have in that thickness. mlapaglia Report post Posted January 17, 2014 If you dont own a caliper you should get one. Since mine is just for leather I have a digital that measures in fractions, mm and decimal inches. Makes sizing leather easy. for $20.00 this one is fine for leather.
