Best Way To Stitch Elastic Webbing To Leather?

I could do with some advice and help on how I might stitch some elastic webbing to some leather.

Let's just say, for ease of my explaining, that you have a piece of leather and you need to stitch the elastic webbing to it so that it forms a closure around the leather. Kind of like a wristband, but for the piece of leather. How would I best stitch that in place and ensure it would hold up to constant pulling?

Sandwich it between the layers or add a tab of leather over the elastic end.

Sorry, not following you there, electrathon. There won't be any layers where I attach it and I don't know what you mean when you say add a tab of leather over the elastic end.

If you can show us a picture or drawing of what you are trying to do or sew it to it would be better. If you google elastic suspenders with leather ends you will find examples where a piece of leather has benn folded over the end of the elastic and stitched in place this formsa tab that can now be sewn or otherwise attached to your other piece of leather.

I suspected I wasn't explaining myself too well.

Here's a picture of a prototype and how it works. Here you can see I've used elastic cord that I simply doubled up and fed through a small hole in the leather before securing it with a couple of knots on the inside. Trouble is the cord is too thin and difficult to grab hold of when opening the wallet.

I want to keep the concept the same, but replace the cord with 12mm wide webbing and have it attach at the same place. Obviously I can't just tie a knot in it like I did the cord, so need advice on the best way to stitch.

Thank you the picture and the explanation clarifies greatly. If you were to satay with your original concept in the middle of your elastic cord you could wrap a oiece of leather and stitch it to itself formog a tab you can grab with your fingers and move the elastic cord easily. If you definitely want to go withe broader elastic you could stitch a small strip of leather the to the back of the walllet over the hole youe have the leather would be a little wider then the elastic you would stitch an end of the elastic under each end of the leather creating your loop of elastic that would work the same as the cord.

That is different than I was envisioning. What I would do for this is to punch a slot and pull your elastic back sort of into a U. sew across it (this will stitch moth the inside and outside elastic at the same time. Then for aesthetics add a 1" round cover as a Band-Aid over the exposed inside ends (just glue it on).

I would also recommend thinner leather, the piece you have seems way thick for a wallet, a lot of unneeded thickness.

I had to read them a few times before I understood, but I think I' clear now - certainly with camano's solution.

Just to clarify your idea, electrathon, are you saying put a couple of slits in the leather, feed the webbing through and then stitch the ends together?

And yes, I'll be using 1mm leather - the leather in the photos is 2mm.
