npleather Report post Posted March 15, 2014 Hello, I am new to leather working and I am having a hard time finding dyed vegetable tanned leather made, preferably, in the US or Italy, or anywhere in Europe, though I am looking for US suppliers. I checked Springfield Leather, and Tanndy Leather, but neither seems to have dyed vegetable tanned leather, and if they do the selection is very limited. Does anyone know where I can look for good quality dyed vegetable tanned leather? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
Colt Hammerless Report post Posted March 15, 2014 Wickett and Craig in PA: http://www.wickett-craig.com/index.php/leathers/pricing If you're looking for veg-tan for molding you'll want their skirting leather. It's available in Russet (basically tan), brown, chestnut, black, as well as a dark brown called "Havana" that you won't see on their site, you'll have to ask for it when you call. Another option is RJF Leather, who's a sponsor here: http://rjfleather.com/content/index.php/products/#vegtan The drum dyed backs is what you'll want. Available in walnut, havana, mahogany, and black. These are from Thoroughbred leather, who has their leather tanned for them in Mexico, on U.S. Steer hides. Good reviews here on Roger's leather and service. What are you making? If you're not looking to mold the leather (say you're making belts) another option is bridle leather, both available from those two sources as well, and in a variety of colors. npleather Report post Posted March 16, 2014 Paul, Thanks so much for you informative answer. I am making just some simple hand stitched handbags, wallets, and pouches. I am not molding leather at this time, maybe in the future. These leathers look great on the website, it looks like they may work for me. Thanks again for you input!
