October Challenge

Recommended Posts

Bert, aka Clay Miller, just let me know that he hasn't had internet service for some time now and doesn't know when it will be back up. So, that's why the delay in the monthly challenge for October. He asked if I could come up with something to fill in with. I've had a couple patterns laying around that I think some of you could have fun with, so I'll stick them both up here.

The first is for all you skull carvers out there. After seeing all the cool things you guys and gals do with skulls, I just had to try some for myself. I found these drawings on the net, put them together and carved them. Of course I had to emboss them when I did it. As with all these patterns, feel free to do your own thing with them, knock out some teeth, add some flames or worms or whatever.

The second pattern is a Sheridan style rose checkbook cover courtesy of Riley Cornelius. Riley is the son of Randy, a member here. He is a winner of the 2006 Ann Stohlman Award and a really nice kid. This pattern also appeared in the November 2007 issue of the Leather Crafters and Saddlers Journal. Thanks Riley for letting me use this.

Ok Crystal, there always has to be one in the class, and it's the one you least expect! Keep it up and you'll be sitting in the front row!

Clay - there's two of us with spitballs hiding in the corners... (heh, heh).

I am SO looking forward to carving both! I practiced knifework on Tina's skull pattern, and I think I will tool both skull patterns.

---Thanks Riley! It's an awesome pattern. I need a checkbook for myself and that's a perfect pattern to try out!

Brent,

I'll be looking forward to seeing how you carve both of these patterns. I'm off to pour a load of cement this morning, and hopefully will be able to get out of there quickly enough to make it to Rapid City for Kathy Flanagan's class that starts this evening. I'm gonna have to recruit her and Bert to sit in on this room and see if they can settle you and Crystal down a bit.

Good luck calming us down. We has met and found kindred spirits within. That means you get double the trouble for half the price! You folks should be happy to have such a bargain. We'll throw in the spitwads at no charge too.

I sent Crystal my knifework of Tina's skull holster pattern. It stank on ice, but I'm hoping she can help me figure out what I'm doing wrong.

Meanwhile*, I think I will make meeself a checkbook cover and put Riley's rose on one side and Tina's card playin' skull dude on the other. That sounds like funsies.

But none of that has anything to do with the challenge, so as soon as I finish up a project this weekend, I'll start skulling it!

Brent

*= whenever someone says or writes "meanwhile" one is required (state law) to chime in with "...back at the ranch, [insert lewd double-entendre here]"

i just have too much fun some days... Oh well back to work.

No rules, right? :)

This looks more like a bad slasher movie victim, but I just don't have the usual 4 weeks it takes me to try to do something. So in a manic 4 hour rush - this is more of a "thought in process". Didn't even try to make it a finished piece. Just kind of wanted to play around with the idea.

I am going to fail this semester - no homework done at all last month - incomplete homework this month - threatening the substitute teacher with paper missiles....

not looking good for me, is it? :rip_1:

Crystal,

You get an A for originality! That's a really neat idea. Don't worry too much about failing the semester, we'll let you take it over. I took a class this weekend and the teacher, Yaklady (my mom) was throwing things at me. I get no respect!

Thanks for playing.

Whew - glad there are do-overs! :) You know you could have just thrown everything back at Yaklady.... well, maybe that isn't such a good idea, I've heard what she does to bad yaks.

Did you guys take any pictures of the class? Would have loved to have been there!

Yes I know what she does to bad yaks, she brought some of it along for us to sample, and it was good!

There were a bunch of pictures taken from Kathy's class. My computer crapped out while I was gone, and it's tough enough trying to type on this laptop, I have no idea how to get my pictures on here, but I'll try and do it as soon as possible. It was a great class, there were only 4 students but we had a lot of fun and I think there will be more like it in Rapid in the future.

Drivin' me nuts. Whips out a" little nothing", complete with a 3D spiderweb across it. I think you're bucking for "teacher's pet"!!

Fine work Ms. C. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise! Don't worry about the teacher, I think he's happy you turned in anything at all. Good thing you took the class pass/fail though...

PSST! Spitwads at 2:15, pass it on...

Brent

[Oh and I DO intend to turn in homework this month too!]

If she was going for teacher's pet, she blew it when she gave that cool album with the dog on it to you Brent. I'm still jelous. Skip the apples, I like cool leather projects.

 ... Moved from the front row, right out the door...

I promise to send something to you, Clay. And you won't even have to babysit any of my friends at an IFoLG show. (Poor Brent - I am just glad he was happy with the album, I didn't have enough cash on me to cover the "pain and suffering". It was my fault - I neglected to tell her not to fidget, stay in her seat and to use her church voice while in class. He handled it like a trooper. But I am not sure she is allowed back.) :)

Clay - it is lovely. When I show it to people they are very impressed and like it. When they find out I didn't do it, they are less impressed with me! ..but they still like the album.

...allowed?? Holy skiving knives batman! She's INVITED back!! You two are more fun than the proverbial barrel o' monkeys!!

OK, back on topic. Here is my rendition of the skull pattern. I'm thinking of using the roses on a guitar strap... Anyway and without further adoodoo...

Well heres my stab at it. I used two different background tools for the eyes just to see which I liked best. I think I like the one on the left the best. Now that I see it on the screen I can see that I should have done something to the lower jaws. Kind of a water stained funky looking peice of leather but it gives it character. Sorta pirate sorta thingy. I think I am starting to talk more like "Doctor-Who" every day. Oh well, time moves on. Unless your a Time Lord.

Got it done. I like it. I used calf skin lace so I decided to punch holes instead of using the chisel to make the slits. The calf skin doesn't enjoy being pulled through tight places. It streches alot. Now i just need to find some one who wants a skull checkbook cover to give it to.

Here is my take on this months challenge.

I doubled up and gave both patterns a try in one shot.

I did have a malfunction with the background tool, maybe I need to a smaller backgrounder or stronger cheaters

This is my first skull/s

Thanks Tom and Johnny for playing.

Tom, your checkbook cover turned out really nice. I like it that you experimented with different background tools. I did that too and think I finally did the inside of the eyes with a smooth pear shader to mush it down without so much texture. There are so many different ways to do these things and it's fun to see what everyone decides to try. The color on yours turned out nice too.

Johnny, I really like the idea of combining both patterns. The floral really seems to compliment the skulls, how weird is that???? I like the way you had the vines enter and exit the skulls, really ties it together.
