Smelly Leather

Recommended Posts

I purchased a full hide of veg tanned leather that is embossed with an Ostrich pattern. The leather came from Springfield Leather. The leather has a identification sticker showing that it came from a tannery in Mexico.

I love the smell of leather, but this leather has a really overpowering smell. It smells like leather until you get right up on it. My best description of the smell is the 'Scotts Weed and Feed with Halts' fertilizer homeowners put on their lawns in early spring here in the Midwest.

I planned on making some dog collars and leashes from this leather, but it would almost be cruel to strap such a smell to a dogs neck.

The only other thing I noticed about this leather was it has a white powder much like talc on the skin side.

If anyone has seen anything like this before, your comments would be appreciated.

Steve

Mexico huh? It's hard telling what tanning process they are using down there. Historically, urine and animal dung were used in the tanning process by our ancestors, Perhaps they still are using them down Mexico way. LOL
