Mattbeck Report post Posted July 26, 2014 Is a 4" Taurus .357 going to be the same patern as an L frame smith or do I need to get a blue gun for it?
camano ridge Report post Posted July 26, 2014 It would be easier to answer your question if we new what model Taurus and 6 or 7 shot. Taurus 85, 605, 850 are supposed to be J frame sized Taurus 82, 65, 66 are suposed to be K fram Taurus 627 Traker is closer to l Frame Taurus 608 N Frame. Just to give you some idea. Again give us the model number and we can be more precise.
JLSleather Report post Posted July 26, 2014 That's what I was thinking .. "357" covers a dozen models.
Mattbeck Report post Posted July 27, 2014 That's what I asked the customer for and all he gave me was that it's a 4" .357. I didn't even know Taurus made anything in the k frame size. Thanks for the help. I'll have to get a model from him.
camano ridge Report post Posted July 27, 2014 If you get it let us know, we will see if we can help out. Should have the model right on the gun. Taurus is like everyone else lots of variations to try to keep up with or out do the others.
katsass Report post Posted July 27, 2014 Been in a similar situation, and after digging around, found that there is no mod# ON the firearm. The serial number is the key -- take that and head for the Taurus website. They have a reference in which you plug in the SN and punch 'SEARCH'. The model # will show up. Mattbeck Report post Posted July 27, 2014 OK. It's a model 617 7 shot Taurus. Where does this compare to smiths. I've got j through n frame, but the 7 shot cylinder has me a little concerned. Thanks for the help.
camano ridge Report post Posted July 27, 2014 Ok, don't take offense at this I am goin to ask two questions. Are you sure it is a Taurus 617 4" Are you sure it is a 4" barrel? The reason I ask is because as far as I know the Taurus 617 is a 357 2" compact. Bascialy a little hand cannon.
Mattbeck Report post Posted July 27, 2014 I'm sorry. I didn't let you know this is a different customer with a Taurus. Yes, it's a 2" revolver instead of the 4" I asked about yesterday.
camano ridge Report post Posted July 28, 2014 (edited) The Taurus 617 is a compact frame which is larger then J and smaller then K. So you can go loose for a J or tight for a K and actuallly it is pretty close to a Ruger SP101. Edited July 28, 2014 by camano ridge
Mattbeck Report post Posted July 28, 2014 (edited) I've got a 2" sp101 but it's a five shot. Did they manage to get 2 extra rounds in basically the same size or is the cylinder going to be larger? Edited July 28, 2014 by Mattbeck
camano ridge Report post Posted July 28, 2014 Have your cstomer measur across his cylinder and compare. I said close not necassarily exact.
JLSleather Report post Posted July 28, 2014 I was wondering about that too. According to the Taurus site, that 7-shot has a 1.53" width, which would put the cylinder size larger than the K-frame, almost big as the L's. Now I'm lost .....
camano ridge Report post Posted July 28, 2014 The Ruger SP101 is 1.349, the lady smith is 1.47. I don't think you are going to find an exact match, I know over all frame size is smaller then the L frame.
Mattbeck Report post Posted July 28, 2014 I wonder how the 617 compares to a detective special.
camano ridge Report post Posted July 28, 2014 "The Detective Special is by design a shortened and somewhat streamlined Colt Police Positive Special, sharing that revolver's slim 'D' size frame and six round capacity. The DS uses a slightly smaller frame than the Colt Official Police or Smith & Wesson 'K' Frame revolvers, but is larger than the compact 'J' frame used in Smith & Wesson five-shot revolvers" (wikpedia)
JLSleather Report post Posted July 28, 2014 The DS is about .05" bigger than the SP101 (ish).
