tossik Report post Posted August 11, 2014 I saw this wallet, and it has nice braided stitch, yet the back is regular straight stitch. this is not saddle stitch is it?
JLSleather Report post Posted August 11, 2014 Looks like what the old foks usedta call a rope braid, or a backstitch. Front comes over two holes, back goes back one, etc ...
tossik Report post Posted August 11, 2014 Is there more information I can read about it, google not coming up with anything.. I really like it!
JLSleather Report post Posted August 11, 2014 (edited) . if google don't find it.. still run a thread from between layers in second hole to back side. go through first hole from back to front; go through 3rd hole front to back; through second hole back to front; rinse & repeat. Grumpy Coyote Report post Posted August 12, 2014 Yep, that's it exactly. Just tried it. I'm not quite sure how to finish it "invisibly", but I think just a lock stitch on the back does the trick.
tossik Report post Posted August 12, 2014 JLSleather, okay I will try that once I get home. So one needle then? Grumpy Coyote, How do you do a lock stitch? Sorry I'm fairly new to stitching
JLSleather Report post Posted August 12, 2014 yep, one needle. only thing to watch is you notice they came up on teh same side of the hole every time. doesn't matter which side, long as they're consistent. and at teh end, we usedta go in the last hole, back up through the second to the last, and instead of all the way out the front, you come out between the layers and cut it off. here, looks like they jus wrapped it. ConradPark Report post Posted August 12, 2014 It is called a 'back stitch' and is a common way to do a decorative hand stitch with garments. It is especially helpful to hold flimsy textiles in place and get away with a wide stitch count. Only make sure to have the needle go up on the same side on the back side of the previous stitch to get a uniform look. To 'lock' it just over stitch and back stitch one stitch and either burn the edge if it's a synthetical thread or white glue it.
tossik Report post Posted August 12, 2014 Tried it last night and worked great! Linen thread worked best as all others I have looked flat. Thanks everyone.
