Sanch Report post Posted November 17, 2014 I have refinished the heritage draw gauge that was poorly cast, and polished. I also put a handle on the Osborne blade that came with it, the handle is brass pinned white tail antler dyed with fiebings Cordovan then coated in clear epoxy

Sanch Report post Posted November 17, 2014 Thanks Mr Johnson, cuts straight, and true with no extra effort the blade was sharpened on my razor hones 1k,6k,12k,and canvas w/green compound then the leather side it'll shave you but it's not quite to hanging hair test sharp cause I didn't want a dainty foil edge. Going South Report post Posted November 24, 2014 Outstanding work, I really like the handle made of deer antler!
oltoot Report post Posted November 25, 2014 I would turn the blade around cause when I'm cutting a full hide strip of anything I start by slicing into the hide from beneath, leaving about 1" connected to help me manage the rest of the strip as I cut, then I go back and cut it free. And, I would miss a hole in the adjustment screw as I make my adjustment with a spike but I'm assuming that this nicely finished beauty will work with hand tightening and needs no tools unlike my beatup, ancient (~+100 yrs) Osborne. I always craved a twist handle one but never found one I could get my hands on. Seems that if somebody had one they either intended to take it to the grave with them or finance a new pickup or at least a heel horse.
Sanch Report post Posted November 26, 2014 Oltoot, the thumbscrews work just fine now that I have "re finished" the whole shebang and when I cut the "test" strap the other day I flipped the handle of the blade to the bottom it just seemed the "correct" way to use it as the bevel on the blade will pull the leather against the fence so that's how I use it. The threads on both the rule and the handle were not tapped completely so once I chased them I got silky smooth threading and I'm pleased with my end results. I intend to make some new blades out of bandsaw blade soon. thanks for all the kind words.
