Members snapmyfengerleatherwork Posted December 16, 2014 Members Report Posted December 16, 2014 What is the difference antique paste and antique gel? I know Fiebings makes a paste and Tandy Eco-Flo makes a gel. Do they apply differently? Is the outcome/look different? Quote
NVLeatherWorx Posted December 19, 2014 Report Posted December 19, 2014 The Fiebing's paste gives you a true antique patina while still allowing you to see the texture of the leather grain; the Eco-Flo gel antique gives you almost the same coverage as if you had stained the piece. Additionally, if you are looking for a deep penetrating, permanent finish then go with the Fiebing's products as they are spirit based; Eco-Flo is water based and has a habit of rubbing off, regardless of how it is finished. I tried the Eco-Flo (and other water based products) when they first came out and found that they aren't a great alternative. I have been using Fiebing's products as long as I have been doing leather (and that is over 40 years) and have never been let down nor had an item returned because the finish/color came off. I would rather continue to make a quality finished product than to have to deal with a dissatisfied customer because I "hugged a tree". Quote
Members Tramps Leatherworking Posted December 19, 2014 Members Report Posted December 19, 2014 This is a patch I did for my son, I used Fiebings antique paste (Black) with tan-kote as a final finish --- I used leather balm with atom wax as a resistor to get some highlights, and Fiebings professional oil dye for the black areas. This may not be a good look for some tastes, but it gave me the old, rugged, worn look I was after... Quote
