Hello,

I have been learning a good deal of info from this site. Thank You! I do have a question regarding a 29k71 I have been restoring.

I have replaced many parts on this machine to 'tighten it up'. So far, so good. However, there is one area I am still having trouble with. My needle bar still has some side-to-side slop that is causing it to skip stitches.

I really have no way of knowing what may be the culprit, the Revolving Bush or the Driving Lever where the Piston Joint slides into. I have replaced the Piston Joint but there is still some up and down slop in where it slides into the Driving Lever which does cause some side to side movement of the needle bar.

I don't want to throw money at parts I don't need, so I guess my real question is: Does anyone know how tight the Revolving Bush tolerances are where the needle bar passes thru? Are they so tight that there should be no side to side movement of the needle bar at all (while the piston joint is disconnected)? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Josh

I can´t give you an advise w/o having the machine in front of me. I also have a bit of slop when I jiggling the needle bar but thats about 1/2 mm or so and I think it is normal. Skipping stitches is usually a timing problem or your hook tip is worn. Do you know how to time the 29K71?

You can download a manual here:

I rebuilt my 29 k 71 when it kept skipping stitches because of side play in the needle bar. With a new revolving bushing and needle bar I had almost zero play, and no more skipped stitches. Both parts were equally worn. Gump.

Constabulary - I do have this timed to near perfection and the shuttle and carrier are both new and there is no slop in the bottom rack at all. My side-to-side slop is in about 2mm+. Thank you for your suggestions.

Gump - After reading both posts I caved in and ordered both parts in question. They should be here soon. Thank you for your help as well.

2mm is really a lot!

Don´t know where you are located but College Sewing in the UK has a lot of 29K parts for a good price - especially their needle bar is very reasonable. I have bought from them when I restored my 29K71 and all parts are good quality (at least the parts I have bought)
