Sheath Making Books-----

I happened to be browsing/searching the net a bit today and decided to see what publications were available for sheath making.

Was surprised to find that there was not much available.

Making Leather Knife Sheaths, volume 1, by David Holter and Peter Fronteddu was the only thing I could find that addressed the topic.

Anybody know of other books that have been done on this subject?

Hope there is more out there and someone will be able to head me in the right direction.

Ray, I have been making sheaths for a long time and looking for books on the subject just as long. Beside the one that you have listed ( I have that book) the only other thing I have found in written text is Stohmans Art Of making cases Volume one. He has some basic sheath patterns and discusses the basics of making sheath. There are several tutorial that are decent. It comes down to the fact that there are just a few basic styles of sheaths that are made. Once you make a couple of sheaths you can make pretty much any style. If you havethe knife you can draw your own pattern and build the sheath from there.

If you are looking to make a particular style of sheath and need information let me know I may be able to help you out. Also if you are interested in tutorials let me know I have put together a list of links of what I think are helpful sheath making tutorial. ALso Paul LOng has some good how to videos as does Chuck Burrow.

I borrowed this book from the library ages ago. Mostly knife making, but I think it also had a section on sheath making

Step by Step Knifemaking by David Boye

Not books of course, but there are lots of videos on YouTube, just put 'sheath making' into the search box

This website & forum has a section on sheaths. Also the sections on completed knives often include pictures of the sheaths, for some inspiration

All of the information is great. Went to Chuck Burrows site to consider the dvd set but it was out of stock. Did find it at USAKNIFEMAKERS.COM and ordered today. Can't seem to get enough information around here.

It is easy to understand how to make the basic sheath, which I have done in the past, but always looking to improve and pick up other methods and ideas that others use and may be helpful for me. I have decided recently to concentrate on making small items that I can finish in a reasonable amount of time. Not much interested in marketing as my ability to get out and about suffers and selling online has not proved to be a good thing for me. Many others have good results but I am lacking in computer skills so it is a hassle, at times, for me to accomplish anything of value.

At least I have fun on this site and always seem to meet great folks willing to assist when needed.

Books are easier as I can open them while working on my projects in the shop but will have to learn to grasp the information in the dvd's and take it with me when I head for the fun area. Might take a few trips but I can do it, eventually. lol.

Ray, I put a wall mounted tv-dvd-cd player with remote in my shop. It's awesome for that, got it and the wall mount for 20 dollars on a buy sell trade site on facebook. It's worth the trouble. I don't have cable or an antenna so no tv but I can play music or watch dvds.

This is my third attempt to respond this morning. No idea where the problem lies but been having minor site problems here for a week or so, on this site only. Perhaps I will make it this time.

That setup is a great idea and to find for $20.00 was even better. Did you have to have shipped or able to pick up locally?

Is the cd/dvd player a built in or a separate item? Doubt if I would find such a deal around here but am going to give it a shot. I have plenty of those, "DUUUUHHHHH" days and would probably never had discovered this easy solution.

Ray, It was a local buy sell trade site, I only had to go about 4 miles to pick it up. They come up every now and then for anywhere from 25 to 40 dollars. The player is built in, you just slide the cd-dvd into a slot on the side of the tv. Good luck finding one they are really nice to have.

Have received the Chuck Burrows dvd's and will be setting up my viewer in the shop, today I hope, and these should be very interesting.

Will do Troy, if able to get that far. Was digging around this morning and found that I had stuck away on a shelf, two additional videos purchased some time ago. One is, Creating an Eagle head Portrait by Robb Barr, another is, Dyeing and Finishing by George Hurst.

Wait, there is more. lol.

Also Classic Carving Patterns, by L.S. Irish and plenty of great ideas and drawings for use by leather folks, and, Springfield leather, volume 1 and 2 of helpful tips.

Even more goodies I found, Heraldry, U.S. Military Insignia, Decorations, and Medals, by the Army Institute of Heraldry, and, Military Clip Art, U.S. Navy Insignia volume 1 by ArchAngel Software, plus, Military Grafx, by Clpgrafx.

Pays to look around once in awhile. lol

Now to get the weather to warm a bit and then to the shop. Got as far as unpacking the setup and decided to get a wall mount to elevate it just a bit. Should arrive soon, just as the weather begins to act right. lol.

Ray, I have all the Rob Barr videos, I've done almost all of them but not the eagle head. When I first got into carving it was all Al stolman, I've got nearly every thing he put out also, but the Rob Barr stuff really takes it to another level. I learned more about figure carveing, dyeing and painting from his videos than all the other books and videos put together. I've got a couple of George Hurst also including that one and they are ok. Looks like your tv going to be busy for awhile. Troy

I hope to be busy in the shop if this weather will warm up a bit. Not typical deep south temps and sure that many folks are having problems. More of the same forecast for at least another week. BRRRRRRRRRRRR-------

I agree that Robb Barr dvd's are great. His works are A1 and sure that everyone using them has enjoyed them immensely.

George Hurst has plenty of knowledge and does a good job with the basics for those getting started.

Just went through Military Grafix dvd and there is over 3500 images for me to select from. Everything from cartoon like characters to the genuine articles. Also great selection of line art which will be great for patterns, should the need arise.

Have to take a trip into town today and not looking forward to leaving the warmth of the casa. High today in upper 30's. Still thinking about that move to south Florida. lol.
